Luckily we avoided the whole mess of the Volcano eruption in Iceland, having left before it and were now returning after it had all settled down. Check-in at Miami was quick and easy although we did arrive 2hours before it opened - my error. Tried to get an upgrade but at £879 each we decided not to.

Then we did not get the seats we had booked, being given 28A and C instead - so being quick to realise the benefit of this I did not mention it and was grateful not to have gone for the upgrade. Our luggage was searched by TSA and we watched with interest, from a distance, as they opened one case - don't mind that though, better safe than sorry.

The Miami Terminal is appalling, not enough seats, terrible toilet facilities and expensive refreshments.

Boarding the aircraft was quick, although we then had to sit and watch everyone else board the plane; 'Mustang Sally'. Then a very comfortable flight, lots of leg room although did not sleep much. The food as usual was poor.

It turned out that Upper Class was almost empty so maybe selling upgrades cheaper would have been a better plan, they would have at least got some extra revenue. I'd have paid £300 each; but not what they asked.

The flight time was 7hour 35 mins with 20 ins holding over Ockham. Arrival was earlier than scheduled and after a ling walk from the gate we passed immigration quickly and had our baggage in our car within 25mins of landing.

Thanks for the trip report.

Upgrade pricing has to be a balance between a reasonable value for the seat and retaining the premium product. £300 would probably be a bit too much of a low ball, as if it were common to do it at those kinds of prices, it would undermine their ability to sell Upper Class tickets at the normal prices in advance.

Upgrade prices at the airport aren't normally much different from buying the seats in advance anyway - even their one-way 'specials' of £219 from Economy - Premium and £599 to Upper don't tend to save you much over buying a Z Upper Class fare in the first place.
