V-Flyer

First of all this sector was supposed to be in PE but thanks to my travel agent, I ended up in economy (that's another story entirely). So living in fear of being boxed in for 11 hours, I called to reserve exit row seats.

I arrived at the airport at about 9:00 am and was checked in less than 5 minutes. No bags as I had already checked my bags straight through to LAX from Lagos. A bit of a queue at the private security channel (a family with a baby and therefore manybits and pieces to be screened) but eventually got out after a few minutes.

Off to the CH where I met the lovely foxtrotoscar46s, it would have been a nice v-flyer party but I had a few work emails to sort out and a few things to do at duty free, so we didn't get to talk so much.

So now for the flight. I had read here that the exit row seats were narrow but I thought well I'm tiny so that shouln't be a problem, and it wasn't at first, but after about 4 hours it started to get really uncomfortable and I really started to miss the footrests (PE) and the ottoman (UC). I sincerely salute those who do these long trips in Y. Having said that, I did appreciate the fact that there was no one in front of me with their seatback in my face and knees, so that was an advantage for me but the big downside was that I was right next to the toilets.

Enough about the seats, the flight was OK. Nothing special about the crew, they were efficient enough. I guess it's difficult in a flight with over 300 pax. Food was average, I had the chicken and potatoes for lunch, a sausage roll for a snack and refused to touch the cheese and onion sa[n]dwich for tea.

Landed at LAX around 3pm, was through with immigration about half an hour later, picked up my bags from the carousel immediately and was through with customs by 4.

It wasn't a bad trip, just one that I would not be repeating any time soon at least not in Y.

Seeing a theme here . Is it cheese and onion you don't like or the presentation? The toss up of space vs toilet queues is always a tough one

I love cheese and the presentation in a little box is really quite whimsical. The onion part of it is where I have a problem. Even on the VS652 the sarnie offered was beef and onion comfit. What is it with VS and onions?

I actually don't mind Y that much, but I think that 10 hours is too long be in those seats, but like you said there is a recession and if the price difference between Y and W is massive, I'll fly Y without hesitation or wait for a sale.

I agree with an awful lot of what you say. I really don't think economy is too bad either --- but 10 hours is a long time; I've done this flight in PE and it didn't really make it all that much better!

Good move on opting for the exit row seats - yes they are cramped, but having the space in front of you does help
