When going away for a couple of weeks sans laptop, what's the best advice? Should I leave the battery in to run down (or out) in my absence, or leave it in the machine???

It should be fine if you just turn it off

As long as its swithced off for under a month (I think) then leaving it on your laptop will be fine. No harm doing either so do whatever you're comfortable with.
