Which airline has the best design on their planes?

Sat at LHR today and looking over the tarmac from the Club House and I was wondering why planes have such boring paint jobs ... I really like the ANZ tail fin design, but who has the best? Please exclude EasyJet or any who post huge web addresses ...

Some years ago I flew back from CPT on a chartered Ugandan 747 (the very short one) and it had a beautiful male lion painted over the whole vertical stabilizer.

You must mean Alliance Air - they used to fly twice a week to Dar Es Salaam/Entebbe and once a week to Kilamanjaro using that aircraft.

I remember them well [:X]

Well found that's the one.It was chartered by SAA and operated by an all SAA cabin crew, flew us back from the SA rugby world cup in 1995 into STN.

Thinking back it was from JNB-STN and not CPT.

Almost went on Alliance Air from LHR to JNB via Dar es Salaam in F after our flight was cancelled, but decided not to in the end as we hadn't taken anything for malaria.

The 747SP was leased to Alliance by SAA who had a 20% or so share in the airline IIRC.

Yeah - the Eskimo - wonder why the new aircraft does not have it.

Loved the Frontier ad!!

Oh and do we all remember the Quantas 747 with the aboriginal art - that was some cool paint job but I think I read somehwere that all the extra paint gave that particular aircraft weight/range issues.

The Qantas one is the Wunala Dreaming one tallprawn referred to in his post.

Yeah - the Eskimo - wonder why the new aircraft does not have it.

I thought it still did have it on their aircraft

Loved the Frontier ad!!

If you look at the links alongside the ad you will see some more. There was a whole range of ads involving different animals on the tail fins of Frontier aircraft.

This is a very tough one to answer to be honest.

One off schemes have to be the Dreaming schemes by QF in particular Nalanji.

Do love the retro LH especially when pictured in black and white images.

Also liking the US Retro jets currently flying around.

The QR Asian Games a/c are pretty nice as well! And dare I say it so is the new Boeing livery.

Current scheme wise- well I think there are too many.

Just browsing through those great Frontier ads, then got onto the series of 'Flip to Mexico' spots. By the time I got to #4 I was in tears.

Great report on the whole campaign.

As Jon says, SAA's Ndizani is good - I have a pic somewhere from when we flew from JNB-CPT on it if anyone would like me to dig it out.

BUT!!! There's hope yet, as here you can see a FANTASTIC one-off they have applied to their newest 738 in celebration of their 75th anniversary.

This is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!! Airliner of the year!!! [^][^][^][^][^]

Yeah - that's what I meant by "the new aircraft"

Yes it does look elegant and certainly better than either of Alaska's 2 Disney planes - of which I would like to post pictures but for some reason it is not accepting the link and the URL is hideously long [:0] You'll just have to Google them

Might be slightly OT here but this is my candidate for the worst....:D

Before this aircraft became XL Airways, it was quite pretty.

I used to like the old PSA (Pacific Southwest) planes. They were orange, true, but the smile on the front made me grin as I boarded. How could one be unhappy boarding a smiling plane? Some of my craziest flights with fun crews were on their planes. Alas, US Airways gobbled them up years ago. I believe they also had a Shamu plane at one time. Now that was something to follow while waiting for takeoff! A Boeing Orca.

I shudder to think what it looked like when it was following you if it was also smiling... cue soundtrack from 'Jaws' here...

I always think the Alaska Airlines Eskimo looks like Bob Marley.
