The Budget thread on this forum has prompted me to inform you of the largesse I received that very same day from Her Majesty's government trading as the Department for Work and Pensions.

I had worked for a few years in the UK (not many) before returning to live in Ireland and having reached the new 40 I decided to try my luck and see if there was anything in it for me from those memorable years. First of all, a word to the wise. Do not, if you can help it, retire at Christmas or reach retirement age at Christmas. Everything gets held up while the nation closes down for the massive onslaught of the digestive system and then only creaks back gently to life in the month of January. I digress. The application was duly made even though for the life of me I couldn't remember my national insurance number, nor did I have it recorded anywhere but the form allows me to give enough clues to allow Sherlock Holmes to find it in his sleep. Documentation to support the application was sought, sent and returned (interestingly franked with a postmark of Schipol!!) and I awaited my fate.

On Budget Day a large missive plopped through my door (once more via Schipol). I have been awarded the massive sum of £2.65 per week, increasing on April 9 to a heady £2.75. Such wealth!!
