Has anyone successfully reclaimed their bank charges?

Just starting to claim. Bank has coopertated so far in allowing me without charge to request 6 years of bank statements.
I'll keep you posted if interested. I am in a fortunate position of being totally willing (and able) to move my multitude of accounts to another bank if it comes to it. I would rather not though

Not something I have experience of but one of our former mods, mcuth, is now a mod on the consumer action group discussion site and is BIG into taking the banks to court.

I will get a link from him and post it in this thread.

This is a link to the Consumer Action Group forum - looks to be a busy site.
I guess a lot of people are not happy about paying bank charges. [8D]

I know there has been a great deal of "hoo ha" about bank charges recently - but surely the best way to avoid even having to worry about reclaiming them is not to let them chare you them in the first place - i.e. don't get overdrawn, don't bounce a cheque etc.

The sums that they charge for these situations are terrible - so unless you make a mistake one month then surely its easier to avoid them??

Will we all be complaining next about credit card companies or store card company charges next - we know what they are when we take them out so why complain when they charge us?

Maybe its the Virgo in me but Ive never been overdrawn in my life!!

Some-one I know had approx £1800 of bank charges over 2 years. They wrote a letter with the assistance of a general letter from 'martins money tips' website, after turning down the offer of £300 in the branch. Within 4 weeks this person had been sent a letter saying that £2154 will be paid to their a/c within 14 working days It wasn't me!!!!!!!!
Don't get me started as to why & how they ran up that much in charges.Good luck.

I thought you might like to know that the cheque for £2154 was paid into my acquaitance's a/c within 7 working days. [y]
Good luck to all of you attempting the same. I would be very interested to know if you are sucessful & how long it takes.
And no, it really really wasn't me.

Okay I'm at a loss. Why is it now possible to reclaim bank charges? Has some change in the law made this possible. I don't bank in the UK so this doesn't apply to me though.

Consumer groups and other groups are pushing the banks at the moment to justify their over-inflated bank charges (for example if a direct debit is returned unpaid beacuse you dont have enough funds in your account, you are charged something like £30). Experts are saying that the true cost of these sort of things is no where near what the banks charge currently customers.

My personal opinion of this is even if banks do lower their charges, they will probably get the money from other means ie my charging customers to use current accounts in the future. That way customers who dont or have never paid any bank charges (ie me) end up paying for all this in the long run.

Agree with that rant 100% - Im sorry, but if the charges are laid down and then someone invokes those charges knowingly then why is it wrong that they have to be paid!! If the charges were unknown and suddenly appeared on the bill then fair enough - but they are published and clear!!

As James says its then those of us who never pay bank charges who will have to pay for services which are currently "free of charge" because we manage our finances for that to happen!!

Grrrrrr!!!
