So I was checking for TV listings on my Sky box and I noticed a new category on the listing:

Anytime TV

So I selected this option and I have a choice of Films, Documentaries, Kids TV etc all ready to watched now.

I have a Sky HD box, but was wondering if anyone with a SKY+ or Normal Sky box get this as well. My guess is that this is coming from the Hard Drive so at best I guess this will be available to Sky+.

Be warned you will be agreeing to a P2P service if you proceed you could find your bandwidth gobbled up. Not a good choice for people with a tight limit on data transfer.

You have me puzzled [?] ...... can I ask the bandwidth of what ? ...... I have Sky HD with the Sky Anytime feature ... Ive not reallly researched exactly how it works but Sky is connected only to your phone line at the very most ........ I may be wrong but I would guess that its only the menu that appears until such time you choose to watch a programme/film.... then when you select it, its transmitted via your dish in the same way as everything else ... you also get the option to record it should you wish at that stage its saved on the internal drive of the HD unit. Also not sure where P2P comes into this ?

Yes, I am lost too - Firstly I haven't 'agreed' to anything - They were just there. Secondly, my SKYHD box is only connected to my phone line and a sky dish, not my internet connection.

This is not Sky by Broadband (which is also not Sky Broadband), this is VOD already available on my HD box.

I also do not know when this went live as I didn't receive any notification from Sky about it, but I assume it was around the same time (ie beginning of April) they decided to go back about 15 years with the launch of Sky Premiere! Anyone remember that the first time round?

I don't know exactly how dish technology works, but I don't believe that real-time streaming of ad-hoc content is available (The entire dish network seems to work on the basis of 'broadcast' ie that everyone is receive everything which is saving on bandwidth.) If everyone was able to stream whatever they wanted the network couldn't handle it. My best guess as to what is happening is that the programs are being broadcast at certain times, the 'hidden' 160gb of the 320gb HD drive is storing programs for a period of time (All programs state they are available until a certain date) and then deleted to make way for others.

On the basis you can pause, fast forward, rewind and jump to any point my conclusion is that this MUST be coming from the Hard Drive on the box.

Has anyone else seen it on a NON HD box?

Sorry Guys, in my haste to warn unsuspecting V-Flyers of the drawbacks of Sky Anytime formerly know as Sky by Broadband, I jumped in. It was the Topic Title that fooled me "Sky Anytime TV" which I misread "Sky Anytime" and the rest is history, as they say. [:I]

However I leave this warning here as not many seem to realise that Sky Anytime is a Peer to Peer (P2P) service. Buried in the T&Cs you agree to this meaning your down loaded movie can be leached by the server to feed other members. For people on tight bandwidth allocations with their broadband connection this could be a problem.

Ive just had a look at my sons sky+ box and the anytime menu is not there ...... however I will force a software upgrade later when he is out and see if it makes any difference.

I think this has only been rolled out on the Sky HD boxes at the moment. The Sky+ boxes should be done in the next few months.

There is a lot of info on this over on avforums.com under the SkyHD section, just incase someone may be interested.

Originally when the HD box came out, there was big discussion about the section of the hard drive being separate for future development.
Perhaps that is where Anytine is stored, explaining why the programmes are only available for a limited time and only a few available?

Can confirm ... have forced a software upgrade on Sky+ box and its not on there yet.

As a side issue ..... has anyone got any info about an increase in HD channels ..... sky engineer work at home a few weeks ago alluded to there being a big increase in the not to distant future ?

Warning: Particularly with Sky One HD, this shows ALL programs on the standard Sky One channel and MOST are not TRUE HD. I was very dissapointed with a recent showing of Lost on Sky One HD which most definitely was NOT in true HD as it had a lot of blocking.
