What is your favourite rugby code?

Mine is Rugby League and follow the results of my hometown team Wigan Warriors!

As a Northerner I'd say Union was more physical. We always used to mock League players for their "girlie" "oooh you've been touched you'd better put the ball down" rules. Mind you we knew nothing - we just played it... (ex Full Back)

You are joking me right? All they do is kick the ball in Union, its more like Football than Rugby "oh somebody's going to tackle me, I'll just kick it away so I don't get hurt"[ii]

I'd agree with Decker though I've never played League and rarely watch it so perhaps I'm not the one to judge. At the end of the day though it's not about the differences in the codes and its not about winning, losing or even taking part.

Its about finding out from your team mates who it was that raked his studs down your back whilst you were busy slowing their ball down at the breakdown then high/late tackling him when the linesman and ref aren't looking. Then you both have a laugh and a pint afterwards whilst being presented with some of the worlds worst cuisine at the Rugby Club.

Happy days....painful though.

Wasn't rugby supposedly invented by a young man who couldn't play (and understand the rules of) football? [:w]

William Webb Ellis is credited with the 'picking up the ball and running with it' tale though it is a highly romanticised look at history. Initially only kicks counted as points and you got to 'try' for a kick by touching the ball to the ground past the try line. Apart from that my knowledge of the history of the game is limited.

Happy days. Rarely won a match, but the brawl was always ours.

Despite the obvious allegience given away in my countdown clock below, I actually enjoy watching both codes.

Union has had by far the greatest television coverage over the years, but League is beginning to pull it's share of viewers - evidenced I think by Saints winning the BBC sports personality team of the year [y]and Daniel Anderson being coach of the year [y]- there aren't that many of us in St Helens to cast that many votes[:0].

I would say League is more physical

In the pack no contest you have a lot more pressure on you in union. I can say from painful personal experience that you can have enough pressure on you in the scrum at tighthead prop to rupture intercostal muscles and fracture ribs.League is a very physical game we used to play it in training to improve ball handling and tackling.Me in the middle.

My other half played at no.3 for over 17 years in union. However since he managed to get two prolapsed discs and retired he has swopped codes, although he supports Wasps (watching on the tv), we have season tickets for Harlequins RL. (Don't laugh)

RL is a much more enjoyable game to watch, (I had 17 years watching John)and I look forward to the games. (even if we do lose) I'm sure we'll beat Saints on Sunday. (Hell could freeze over!!!)

I played both (mainly union). The leage lads were more down to earth and you did not get so many public school boys who were up themselves, But when playing Union against the West Riding teams (Cleckheaton,Ossett,Adwick etc)I really found out what a hard men were.
I have followed the Lions and England to Australia and hope that when older my son loves the game as I do. I believe rugby can be a great binding force between men and Im sure it saved me from a wasted life by giving me self belief and disapline.

Well, as you may have noticed, Hell did not freeze over and we lost to Saints. Quins were chronic! Jon Wells was one of the few who played well.
