Okay, so here's the dilemma. I'm in Cork right now, and i am hungry. The room service menu isnt doing anything for me right now. Talking to Richard online, he suggests ordering a nice Dominos Pizza from the shop up the road to be delivered to me at my 5* Hotel.

I just cant do it, i'd feel so chavvy, but Richard assures me that its perfectly acceptable and that Hotels are used to this kind of thing.

So, is it right? To stay at a 5* hotel, and get po' mans food delivered to your room?

Lot's of nice hotels I have stayed in have local take out menus in the room.

Been there, done that. Go for extra Garlic & Herb dip.

Can you remember the documentary on the Adelphi hotel in Liverpool the manager women blew a gasket if anyone tried to get outside food into the hotel:D

I've never personally had a problem bringing in outside food to the hotel, though I know a friend who got a load of grief from hotel management for coming in with outside food - mainly because the room service was overpriced and crap.

One hotel I frequently stay at in the US, I'm always going out for deli food, pizza and donuts, rather than eating their food!

(Mainly because there's a great pizza shop and the infamous Donut Wheel up the street.)

Well i went ahead and did it, and i'm sat here with a pizza! Yay!

There are no menu's in the room here (I know in the US its pretty normal practice) and i did get a strange look from reception as i collected the pizza and paid the delivery guys, but what the hell. The overpriced room service probably wouldnt have been as good as Domino's Tandoori Hot One .

Good call Sarah! [y] Sorry to be late on this one but I would have advised you to go ahead and order the pizza. They really should not complain unless you try to consume it in any of the public areas.

If there was a local bottle shop, I might be tempted! I can only see a Shell garage, and the last time i bought Alcohol at a garage i was in my teens!

I would feel a little guilty (maybe because I think every hotel is like all those old B&B's I used to stay at back in the 80's). Would try and be discrete about it, but thats just me.

Hope its nice and I'm sure its miles nicer than the pizza I ordered as room service from a Hilton once, which consisted predominantly of grease and dough.

I ordered room service at the Four Points in Chelsea and it was awful, so I had no problems with strolling through reception carrying my take out in front of the staff the next day.

I ALWAYS have a corkscrew & bottle stopper in my toiletry bag so that I can buy & out & bring in [}:)]
They are as essentisl as tweezers:D

I do all the time. US hotel, particularly in Florida almost encourage you to.

I thought only I did that, except for the tweezers that is.
I got a nice curry take out one time, sat in bed with it on my lap, reached over to get my wine, the curry went everywhere, had to do a runner in the morning, but you would expect nothing less of me, would you[V][:w]

Sarah - you do know that when GJ hears about this he is going to be very disappointed with you, the Good Lady ordering Domino's take out [:0][:0], surely there was a Michelin-Star restaurant near by you could have frequented instead[}:)]

Go for it, if the hotel has a problem with it explain to the hotel manager that the food they have on offer is crap and as this is a 5* hotel you expected better and if they want to keep your business it has better get better.

I know, I know. I'll be out of favour with GJ as quick as you can say 'Paul Smith'.

The food in the hotel restaurants looked fantastic, it was the limited and expensive room service that wasnt appealing, and when you are a Lady travelling without her entourage, its not really the done thing to dine alone in a restaurant. Not without a chaparone!

Trust me, if I'm travelling alone, I hate eating alone in a restaurant, and would much prefer room service too. You can't help feeling like you're a) on show to everyone else, and b) look like a billy no-mates.

So, it's not just a girl thing, but I get where you're coming from, because those damned walking hormones just try and pick you up if you're eating alone.

I see it as being more of a problem in the US than in the UK as well. A friend I know in the US now won't go in any of the 'social' areas of a hotel while travelling alone because she's tired of being hit on by married sleazebags staying there. She likens hotel stays to prison visits.

Shame the Lamb was out of town...

Gosh, I feel the opposite. I hate eating in my hotel room.. it's like an admission I have given up! I would much rather dine alone in a nice restaurant, with the potential for human contact and making some friends.
