V-Flyer

A bit of an anoraky question but I've noticed a few photos of planes recently where the wheels sit in holes under the AC but aren't underneath doors. I think one was an Embraer? When I look at Imap on VS it says outside air temp -45C. So I'm wondering how they withstand this without the rubber becoming brittle. Perhaps even with doors it's the same temperature and it just streamlines the AC better but I'd always assumed there was a little heating there to keep the temperature up.

Anyway, just wondering ...

No heating in the gear bay, the APU bleed duct passes through the gear bay on both the A340 & B747 & some of the aircon system is located here on the B747. They are however covered in special insulation blankets.

Although a large proportion of the landing gear may be frozen by the time it gets on the parking stand, the wheels will have defrosted.
