This fuel-drivers strike...

While I'm one for backing any action that brings down fuel prices for all, this *current* one is all about salaries.
OK, fine. People (as we all know [ii]) have a right to strike about pay. But today, I have to say I'm absolutely shocked.
It seems these tanker drivers are hardly 'bread-lining' in the first place! The offer they've just rejected is worth 41,500 per year (SALARY) if they work overtime. Indeed, even the union have conceded that without working overtime, the deal that's been REJECTED is worth a base salary of 36,000.
BBC SourceNow I know this may sound a little rude, but 40k salary for a tanker driver? And that's not enough? [:0]
Please, someone, help me understand why I should feel sympathy for their 'plight'? [:?]

Completely agree.
That's more than I earn - and people think us doctors are overpaid....

I do agree with you, though i believe their gripe is that they have not had a payrise in well over a decade. My grievance is with the numpties that are panic buying petrol!!
Thanks,
Sarah

Quite right. The brain-deads are reading that there are no deliveries to SHELL and taking that to mean everywhere. As Shell point out, 99% of forecourts are receiving deliveries as normal.
It's also worth pointing out that none of the drivers are employed by Shell. The tanker deliveries were contracted out a couple of years ago to independant companies.

Unfortunately, this is incorrect. The majority of other drivers (at least in Scotland) are NOT crossing the picket lines.

Now there was me wondering why all the normal pumps except the special premium pumps were out of action when I filled up on the way home on Friday. I was informed that they hadn't run out but were rationing. Interesting definition.

Hold on, I've just read that the drivers don't even work for Shell.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7455233.stmThey work for two companies that are contracted by Shell to do the work - surely Shell has put a break clause in the contract for any disruption? Sure there are other haulage firms that would take the contracts if offered.

Well, given the headlines shouted out by two tabloids with 'Daily' in their title, I'm not surprised. Nor do the rest of the media escape blame in this respect, many of them inflating a four day strike into a 'fuel crisis', wheeling out, again and again, pictures from Autumn 2000. It's almost as if they are trying to make, rather than report, the news....
