With XP, I used to have a USB symbol on my taskbar where you could remove a USB device, then unplug it.

On Vista i can not find such a way of removing a USB device, can anybody advise on how to do this ?

It appears on my PC. Have you opened all the taskbar icons fully? It's often hidden.

Just pull it out. 18months on from first install of Vista, no BSOD and no issues.

Right click on the task bar and select properties. Under 'notification area' tab click on customise in the 'icon' section. Hopefully, you will see it under the list for 'past items'.

If not you could always create a shortcut to this command

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Mind you as Darren says, you shouldn't have any issue just pulling it out (as long as any accessing has completed)

Just ensure write behind caching is disabled.
