The Pox!

Our darling daughter, Tizer, has finally succumbed to chickenpox, which has been taking her peers and schoolmates out like flies since the new year.
The poor wee thing is covered from head-to-toe and not having the best time of it. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas for relieving the itching, other than the 3 litres of calamine lotion we've already gone through.

Far too long ago for me to remember anything
On the plus side, at least she has them now and not in 88 days time.

Calamine and tepid baths seemed to work for our two. Our eldest still bears a couple of scars twenty years on from his pox ridden days, so vigilance in trying to stop Tizer scratching them is advised, and keep her fingernails trimmed.

Cool baths with sodium bicarbonate then lots of calamine lotion [:)]
Poor Tizer, though its good she has it young. I was 12 when I got it and it wasnt much fun. I still have a tiny scar on my face where I scratched one of the spots so do try to keep young Tizers hands tied up over the next week or so [:)]
Thanks,
Sarah

Poor Tizer!
Distraction helped my Apprentice when he had it a couple of years ago. Is there any films she hasn't seen yet or a new toy/game that she'll like?
Also, ice cream helped.
Hope you and Mrs Mdvipond have had the 'pox. Unfortunately, the Apprentice gave it to Mrs DA and she came off worse!

I second the cool baths with Sodium Bicarbonite.[y]

Oatmeal or an oatmeal based product such as Aveeno added to the bath water will help soothe the itching

Cut her nails short and watch her like a hawk. Mini NH had this last yr & a bad one on her forehead which has left a 'dent'. Calomine & baths (mrs NH's a Doc and these seemed the best practical solutions)
Just watch for ones looking infected...
Cover up as much as possible to avoid scratching them directly- maybe a mini Burka??
Have Fun!

Thanks all for the advice. Sodium Bicarbonate? Is that like baking soda? It's certainly well worth a try. As is oatmeal, although I'm not sure what bathing in cold porridge must feel like.
Scratching is a problem, especially as she's using everything from the edge of the sofa to the bannister to ease her itching. A burka might just be the answer...

Sodium Bicarbonate aka 'Bicarb' = Baking Soda.

Depending on how annoying she is (other than being 12 already) you could always send her outside in the cold for an hour or so and tell her it will ease the itching !
(You can tell I don't have any children ...)
And yes better she has the pox now!

Oh dear ! not sure where I picked up that young Tizer was 12 from but even I wouldn't put a 3 year old out in the cold for an hour (your parenting style may differ of course!)

Worry not, it's all relative TB. I reckon 15 minutes outside should be enough for a 3 year old...

15 minutes for a wee yorkshire lass?
Tsk - not as hardy as they used to be ! and your spoiling her with UC when she needs a good few years in steerage ! (for some strange reason the child protection people won't let you put kiddies in luggage anymore ...)
(PS Tonty and Captain Beary B Bearenberger send Tizer a paw waggle)

My Granny told me to put brown vinegar in warm bath water, probably not too good if she has any open sores though.
If you think she is likely to have any scarring once the worst is over, then I'd recommend a Vitamin E cream. Lots of them about including ones for preventing stretchmarks in pregnancy.

Tizer has now set off along the rocky road to recovery without too many signs of potential scars (and, thankfully, without having to resort to sticking vinegar in the bath - Jilly, that must really stink!).
Thanks again for the helpful advice!
