The Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week.
All numbers including those belonging to children will be open
to cold calling, which is quite a concern !!
If you want to avoid such texts to your mobile, you can
register ex directory using the link below. It takes just a few
minutes and you will need your mobile close at hand as they
text a code to you during the process which you have to enter.
To remove your number go here.

http://www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove-me.html# Before you do, please check that you are actually on it first. Do NOT be typing in your number anywhere. I've had the same number for the last 13 years (can anyone beat that?!), and I didn't appear in any of the towns that I've lived in for that time

I did check first and got the text saying ABC trying to contact you, used my work phone to test it. Better to be safe though. i hate these scaremongering emails that go about and always check them out first

Ummm - not sure it's even an issue:
quote:How it works
We do NOT give out
mobile phone numbers.
Instead, when you search on 118800.co.uk, well send an SMS message to the person youre seeking, giving them your contact details so they can call you back.
For more information, see our how it works demo, or read our FAQs page.
In order to start your search:
1. Fill in the details of who you want to contact
2. If we find them, we'll text them with your details
3. You'll be charged 1 if we succeed
So, they DON'T 'give out' any numbers for cold calling, etc. from what that says. [?]

Apologies no, never saw that page, however could mean lots of text messages from cold callers, junk email type stuff. Bear in mind children more will be curious if ABC is trying to contact them....

Kids now adult but bought them one when they were starting to go out at night so they could text me when they were on the bus home and I knew when to expect them.

Agreed. Its a must have accessory these days, can understand the need for emergencies only if out, then all they need is a cheap pay as u go phone.
The girlfriend's 14 year old nephew is currently hassling his dad to upgrade his mobile to a blackberry so he has instant messenger as well. Luckily his dad is standing firm over this, shame he won't take his phone from him tho

Because it is the in thing!
I agree that it is totally stupid, but I blame the parents for giving them what they want.

I can see why kids need a phone, but do they really need a smart phone though.

Totally agree with bottom of the range pay as you go otherwise they get 'borrowed' or worse still mugged.

However, like everything else with this generation, makes me sound old at 35, its a fashion accessory and a status symbol, so its not a case of just having a phone, its having the most up to date phone form the 'in' manufacturer. I hear Apple iPhones are the favoured choice at the moment

I guess I am getting old. I never had to text my Mum to tell her I was coming home, I just had to get home by a certain time or I knew she'd kill me. [:)]
Thanks,
Sarah
