V-Flyer

The last two nights, my kitty, Hello, age 10 female, has gone around the house yowling so plaintively and then, good grief, she goes and pees on her favorite chair.

She has never done anything like this before. I have not changed her litter, her litter box location, her food, nothing...her behavior has really come out of the blue. She's a 100% indoor kitty. Now she's crying again and peeing on the chair as I type this...

I have a call into the vet, but was wondering if anyone here knew what might be wrong or had experienced this with their kitty? I'm thinking she must have some kind of urinary tract infection or something?

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Well there is a full moon here, my pussy also wanted to get out (for a mate) at that time; even though she had had the snip.

I do hope Hello is OK, might be worth taking her to the vet for a once over.

It does sound like urinary tract infection or possibly a stone - do you feed dried food?
Either way - plenty of fluids!

Your cat's name is 'Hello'? You must sound like a copper when you greet her. [:D]

That aside, does sound like some sort of infection and maybe has discomfort using the litter tray.

Is it peeing or spraying? Spraying could mean she is upset by another cat (neighbours?) and is getting stressed (our cat Tom is like that currently)

Not caused by upset due to fireworks noise is it?

Is Hello eating normally? interacting with you as usual?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas. I just took Hello to the vet and she is being kept there for testing today. The vet did seem to think it was an infection but, as good doctors, they are ruling everything else out through careful examination.

Some answers to your questions:

* She has always eaten dried food, exclusively. I've tried to feed her caviar and fresh salmon -- she won't touch it!
* I do sound like a copper :-)
* She's peeing. She can't see other cats from where we live...
* No fireworks (His Grace's birthday has passed) and she is eating normally and interacting well.

I am so sorry HK isn't well. Sudden howling and what is affectionally known as 'inappropriate urination' certainly points to a medical, rather than behavioural problem. If she's such an indooor kitty then it's unlikely that external things might be stressing her (new tom cat in the neighbourhood etc). I guess that if she's an indoors cat you don't have a cat flap? If you did you might have an unwanted visitor which could be stressing her.

Trouble with cats is they don't start complaining until they are quite ill so I would follow up on your vet conversation asap.

The vet is definitely the best to sort this out.
He will probably run GFR tests to check kidney function.

There has been some correlation between dried food and kidney problems. Some dried foods are specifically formulated to reduce the risk - vet will advise.

We had one Birman who lived to over 22 eating mainly dried food but it is important to make sure they get enough fluid - plenty of fresh water in a large dish.

Bill -- thanks! The vet say they would screen kidney, liver, et al. You are spot on about the liquids...that's why I've always watered her from a 'fountain' style water bowl that has moving water. I was very interested to learn that cats are naturally attracted to moving water and tend to drink much more of it vs. a still water bowl.

So Hello Kitty is with the vet and it would have been my advice also.

Another tip/bit of advice for you. Wash her chair with a solution of water and white vinegar and it will get rid of the smell of cat pee.

Water in a bowl, what a strange idea, try water in a glass, it's the only way our little ball of fur will drink.

Please let us know what the vet comes up with.

GJ - I do hope Hello is OK. Blue (my 16 yr old British Blue Russian Blue x) recently started to pee inside the house (something he's never ever done even though he's experienced intermittent cystitis from a young age even being fed Hill's). It turns out that a new Tom has moved into the neighbourhood and has been terrorising my gorgeous boy (who's not as sprightly as he was but still indulges in the odd scrap when challenged).I've put a lit tray down in the house and normal service seems to have been restored (so to speak).I'm chasing the other Tom out of the garden whenever I see it.
Moving water for Blue too .

T10 might be best for our palette but Fabric Conditioner - 'Comfort' diluted is one of the most effective liquids as far as kitty is concerned.

UPDATE: the vet found no infection or urinary crystals (smoke THAT, crack head!) in kitty, which means it's either something the blood work will show next week, hypertension or behavioral. Oh, kitty, please just let me sleep tonight...

Hello Kitty slept peacefully last night and used her box twice. No wailing, no chair surprises. I am cautiously optimistic that it was some strange behavioral strop...here's hoping we're all past that now! Thanks again to all for their kind words and ideas.
