A quick question.

Mrs Scrooge and myself have a wedding to attend in the UK at the end of January, being the typical American (insult intended) her view on a British wedding is that it is all very formal, think 4 weddings and a funeral.

I am being told (by her) that she now requires a very large hat to wear for the thing.

Now I do have to say, all the weddings I attended in the UK were very much in line with her view of things [:#], though with my family it always was a pretty formal thing.

A formal invitaton to such an event in UK should always state the dress code required/recommended (e.e morning suits, white tie, black tie, lounge suits, smart casual (god forbid!), cocktail/after 6/8 etc etc) and that would give you both a guide to what one should wear.

Hats are still worn at UK weddings, but I would say more by the slightly older generation. Many women don't wear anything on their heads, but a lot of the younger generation now wear fascinators. I don't think she would look out of place with or without a hat, and unless it is strictly specified (don't think I have ever seen hats as a must) then she should go with what she feels comfortable with.

I am loving the fact that Neil knows what a fascinator is!!!

Tink, I am a young(ish) gay man, of course I know what a fascinator is! I was actually helping my hairdresser choose which one suited her best just before our holiday.

Hat, yes usually, but not necessarily a big one. A lot of the hats I've seen recently at weddings tend to resemble the aftermath of a pigeon hitting the head at speed.

Well I learn something every day, but isn't a fascinator still a hat, a bit like vehicle and bus?

Scrooge, fascinator or not, weddings still suggest a hat for the ladies, even chav weddings!

For me personally it would depend on the venue of the marriage ceremony itself. High Church/ Church, Chapel (or any other religous building) would (for me ) indicate a hat should be worn.If the ceremony was to be delivered in a Registry Office (or other civil non-religous venue) I would view headwear as optional (unless the invitation states otherwise).I think 'fascinators' are pretty pointless things and best kept to the heads of the bridesmaids.

Well, I'd say it is dress smart for a wedding - so trousers and shirt at a minimum, I'd turn up in a suit* with tie to be honest.

At a colleagues recent wedding, one of the feamle guests thought it would be clever to turn up in her own wedding dress. Hats are optional.

* - Zoot suits do not qualify. Nor do tuxedos of any colour.

IMHO don't wear the same colour as the bride, i.e that's usually white or cream or ivory. To make it easier just get a paint chart to see the 101 shades of white currently available[:w]

Also don't wear black unless it's a themed wedding, i.e black & white/off white/cream/ivory.

The bigger the hat, the more likely you are to get the person behind you huffing because they can't see the service or bride/groom fainting.

If a fascinator is worn it may well tickle the nose of the person beside or behind your wife. Also, fascinators are very likely to appear in the corner of most snapshots of the wedding although the wearer won't be.

Just relax & enjoy the event after all the invaluable advice given before mine.

gentlemen must make sure they join any fight on the correct side i.e. the side that invited them.

ladies must club together and join in cries of 'leave it he aint worth it' !

watch episodes of eastenders or coronation street to get the most up to date information.

Well whatever is worn on top, Speedos are fun to wear underneath. Fun to break them out around the time folks get drunk.
