When to take the Christmas tree down?

Do you wait for twelfth night, or does today's Bank Holiday present itself as the right time?

We took ours down a couple of days ago. My folks always used to wait until 12th night - which was also my grandad's birthday.

Then again, we didn't get ours done until about a week before Xmas this year. Oops, I suppose that was last year, technically speaking...

Tradition over here says that you don't take down the decorations and the Christmas tree till twelfth night, which is also known as Little Christmas or (now more commonly) Women's Christmas. The reasoning behind that was that the woman of the house had so much work to do over Christmas that she never had a chance to enjoy it and so Little Christmas was hers. This has meant that in latter years there have been special events on that night and sometimes it has been difficult to get into bars and restaurants.

Having said all that, I'm getting heartily sick of the decorations and am longing to take them down

Mine will be down today. I had actually planned to clean the cars this morning but as it's snowing heavily again here v( that plan has gone completely out of the window.

Took ours down on the 1st - a little early obviously but I had some free time and who knows when the chance would have arisen otherwise.

Either 12th night or the first day the kids are back at school.

My wife took ours down yesterday, mainly to distract the cats from being naughty.

We are usually the 1st, but actually did it on the 31st this year. For me the Christmas celebrations are for December and come 1st January it is a New Year and I can't be doing with all the Christmas decorations being still up.

I was told that it's bad luck to take the tree down on any day other than 12th night.
I hope that isnt so for all those miserys that took theirs down early.

Given the number of undressed Xmas trees in gardens on my way into Balam there will be an awful lot of bad luck !

BH's off on a trip to Europe Wed to visit family due to an illness, and I'm off on Thursday for two weeks for work, so ... much as we'd always want it to be 12th night, didn't happen this year. They went yesterday.

Interestingly, the 12th night thing is a riff on the original date for the closing of Christmas, which is Candlemas (aka Groundhog Day). Not sure if that's the reason why some folks over here seem to leave decorations on for so long ... :)

A few years back I flew out to Jacksonville, FL on Boxing Day/ Stephen's Day for a wedding a couple of days later. We were met at the airport by the groom who, on the way to the car, told us that the town decorations had been taken down that day! I couldn't believe it. I was so looking forward to seeing them :(

Ours down today. Would've waited for 12th night but couldn't be bothered with doing all the sorting out on a work night!
