You just beat me to the news. Very interesting news indeed - I'm sure this thread will grow a bit.

Airbus must be happy. Wasn't this kind of assumed since T5 is all geared up for A380's?

Options for 7 more 380's and 12 Dreamliners too. I wonder if this is going to be the model for a lot of the large airlines now, a combination of the two.

Well I suppose they needed some new planes to show off at their new Terminal (about 5 years after that opens)...

I still find it sad that all these airlines are casting aside the much more aesthetically pleasing 747 for this big bus [:#]

Cheers!

The point made on A.Net was that there was no RR option for the 747-8, which made it somewhat difficult to order. Also the fact that BA could not be seen to be upstaged at LHR with other airlines parading around in A380s.

You're right, it is BA's "manor" after all....

LOL!

It makes it sound like a fashion show. "And now BA comes wearing the latest in A380 wear. Note the juxtaposition of navy against white and the wavy Union Jack feature on the tail"

Much as I'd like to agree, I can't however see BA spending £2bn or more on 380s just for vanity!

Seems this is the first of a much larger and longer term plan that squarely allows us to see BA's decisions on core long haul aircraft. A380 for high volume routes and Dreamliners for high frequency / lower volume routes. I should think that if all goes well this order will at least double in coming years.

Airbus must be ecstatic. There were strong rumours of a European flag carrier ordering 380s and with BA's high profile I'm sure this will help further sales.

a.net has indeed gone mad.

Vanity re the A380 order: I seriously doubt it.

TBH I even question people who say VS and BA only order Airbus due to the European connection. The number of 350 orders by British airlines compared to the 787 clearly shows the lack of connection!

Bit of a hit for VS as it now looks like they will not be the first British carrier to fly the 380.

Great news for the 787 as well- it now looks like it will be the plane of choice amongst UK carriers with MON, TOM,FCA, GSM (Cough), BA and VS all having orders.

Excellent news.

Glad that the A380 is joining the BA fleet (keeps the boys in Broughton, North Wales in jobs). Looks like VS will have to keep that A380 order now...they can't be outclassed by the dark side now can they? [}:)]

I wonder if this will force VS to bring forward their delivery (if they can)? After all, thats ALOT of free SRB type publicity they will be missing out on by not being the first British carrier flying the 380!!!

Not doing a lot for fleet standardisation there.

TBH, it seems like a bit of a strange order for BA; neither order is particularly large and will not go any way to replacing the fleet, just leading to a motley assortment of a/c.

They did say very clearly that this was only a start, to replace the 767s and oldest 747s. Future orders will replace the remaining 747s and start to replace the older 777s. Many forecast that this means a standardisation on A380 and then possibly 787 or 787 plus A350. Which is not much different to 747 + 777 + 767 but with the added advantage of all RR engines.

Tangentally, this probably means the 747-8 is history.
