o2 have updated their website to include a message that the current model of Iphone is no longer being sold. Meaning that if the 2nd Gen is to arrive in June/July o2 will have six weeks of no sales.

Apple UK are still selling the models in their online store and walk in stores.

With news that Italy will have two Iphone approved operators it looks like tides are changing at Apple.

Chatter is suggesting that the 2nd gen Iphone will be launched in certain countries (such as Austria) before it goes on sale in the UK and US. AT&T have stopped staff taking holiday throughout June (as they did last year when the 1st gen was launched).

It now firmly looks like the new Iphone will be here in the next 6 weeks with it being announced at the Developers conference in June.

For anyone who is after a 3g iPhone O2 are now registering those who are after one when they come out. Details here (clicky). In outline, for the 8G model the cost will be £99 on £30 and £35 tariffs, and free on £45 and £75 tariffs. The 16G model will be £159 or £59, depending on tariff. All the tariffs offer unlimited wifi through The Cloud and BT Openzone sites, and the phones will be available from O2 or from Carphone Warehouse.

In one of those rare lucky coincidences, my contract with Orange expires on 6 July, which leaves me perfectly placed to pick up one of these phones - result!

Best wishes

David

Tempted by the handset and package but until O2 pull their finger out and upgrade their network to 3G where I live and work, I'll continue to use 3G on another network thank you very much.

I am tempted, and I've pretty much decided on an iphone over a crackberry.

Just how good is the internet connection, can you pretty much surf where you want? Also, how does surfing the net work abroad - is this hideously expensive?

cheers!

I use my iPod Touch to surf the web which is very easy to use and see web pages with (once you get the hang of zooming in and out using a finger sweep)

I just wish Apple would include Flash support though, as so far Safari on the Touch (and I guess iPhone) doesn't support this.

You do need quite thin fingers though to use the on-screen keyboard as the buttons arn't very big.

I wouldn't like to say how much roaming data charges would be especially after reading many of the horror stories about huge bills when people get home.

Does the iPhone have WiFi as well? That would be the easiest option when roaming.

The iphone certainly have wi-fi so that would be the best option to use when abroad. Even on O2 website mentioned that you may wish to turn off data roaming when abroad.

I will be getting a 3G iphone after been sitting on the fence since the first gen iphone was released.

Yeh I saw that the other day and commented on it in the off topic thread.

The thing is on PAYG it will not be cheap. Currently for a bog standard Sony Ericcson on PAYG ,which is free on a 18 Month £30 contract, you pay some £100. Surely on PAYG we are going to be looking at a price akin to what the 1st generation was at. Would make no sense to have it cheaper than the contract version.

Fear not this will not become the phone of the chav.
