Plans for a new Melbourne-based low-cost airline have been shelved. Paul Stoddart had planned to start a low-cost airline named Ozair. However, Stoddart will not go ahead with his plans in December 2003, due to the launch of Virgin Blue and Qantas's new budget carrier, Jetstar. UK entrepreneur, Sir Richard Branson, said that Virgin Blue was well capitalised and could beat Jetstar in a price war. He is also considering starting a low-cost carrier in Asia. However, Singapore Airlines is also backing a new low-cost carrier based in Singapore.
