Having reserved our seats for in PE for next August it seems that this route is going to be serviced by Airbus 346 instead of 747. LAX information also lists the 346 for this flight as well.

So the question is what is PE like on a 346 compared to upstairs on a 747? It can't possibly be as good. Can it?

Depends what you consider 'good' about upstairs on a 744. From a noise/less people moving about point of view I do prefer being upstairs but the seats/service are still the same regardless I think :)

As Nitrox says it's the same seat/service but, IMHO it is a different world being in the "bubble" on a 744!

The difference is that on the upper deck you have dedicated WC(s), FA, 2-2 configuration, wide aisle giving the illusion of space and most of all you feel like you're on a private jet!:D(well closer to one than on an A346 anyaway)

Still showing as a 744 for this coming Saturday (when I take the VS7), but I believe it goes over to a 346 from the end of the month.

The 23/24 have been Airbus for a long while (if not forvever).

It's been forecast for a while now that the 7/8 would be a 346, not lest because the size of the plane will cause problems with disembarkation at LAX.

But as others' have said - upstairs on 747 feels like a mini jet with better service, higher loo ratio, more space, its quieter and so many other assets often reported. Whereas the 346 I feel, while nice, cool and modern as well as just the same servie and a more modern plane and seat is just that bit less personal.

Hope you enjoy it, and your destination and holiday.

Thanks for your views. My experiance is that the environment upstairs is much nicer even though as has rightly been pointed out the food etc. are the same. Having done MIA, MCO, SFO & previously LAX upstairs I don't think it'll be the same.

I guess we'll have to live with it or upgrade to UCS. Hmm that's a thought.

One other question springs to mind do the 346s have VPORT?

The PE in the A340-600 is rubish compared to the B747 upstairs PE.

It also be that the A340-600 cannot get into terminal 2 at LAX so it may be on a remote stand.

I have flow the B747 on this route more than 50 return trips and if all this is true I fear I will be giving BA a try in the near future.

I've never flown it (was lucky enough to be in Upper), but I've seen it. The lack of a dedicated flight attendant, a tiny handful of window seats, no dedicated lav, and the dreaded middle seat really let down the PE product on the A346.

Its a 744 today too for my VS8 back. VS23 out on Saturday was a 343 (UCS). The PE on the upper deck is superior to the 346, although the bulkhead row (18) on the 343/346 is quite reasonable. I was in 18A on VS23 on Saturday and there seemed to be more legroom that I remembered on the 346, certainly enough to stretch out in. Given the choice I'm on the 744 upper deck though which I am today (72K) and hopetully it will be ok for the overnight flight (although will try to get 70A/K at check-in)

As for if I'm fussed about VS7/8 moving to the 346? Not really, I fly it a few times a year at the moment but can cope with either if in PE, still the upper deck is nice on the overnight flights in UC over the front rows on the Airbus.

As has been discussed elsewhere, the airbus A340-600 is scheduled to take over operating the VS007-008 route from Sunday 30th October.
