Just got this email from UPS :-(

Dear Valued Customer,

UPS Supply Chain Solutions have been contacted by all major airlines and informed of an imminent increase in the current level of fuel surcharge. We will implement this cost increase, at cost, with effect from the 5th September 2005 to all our customers.

Fuel surcharges will increase from the existing £0.30 per chargeable kg to £0.34 from the 5th September 2005. Please accept this letter as formal notification that this will be applied to all export airfreight from the UK. Import surcharges will be passed on according to the levy from each airline.

We appreciate you have a choice in your freight forwarding partners and we thank you for choosing UPS Supply Chain Solutions and trust that our ongoing effort to improve our services is resulting in your expectations being surpassed. If there are any areas of your supply chain with which UPS can assist, whether this is in air cargo, express, charter or ocean freight, or indeed if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your local UPS Supply Chain Solutions office.

May we take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and assure you that we will continue to monitor the situation with regards to airline rates and surcharges and will as always look to provide our customers with the best value possible.

Well that's unfortunate but inevitable it seems. With pump prices heading over £1 per litre the airlines who haven't hedged will up their fees. Whether its Katrina, global warming, or China or shortages or whatever, the future is getting more uncertain. What is certain however is that airlines are passing it on penny for penny and according to some, even more.
