OK, here goes, first TR.

Early (ish) M6 southbound to connect with VS011 for Boston - this trip was to be punctuated by a series of Firsts. (First first was visiting Boston.) First upstairs PE for both me and the present Mrs Treelo and we werent disappointed. Seats 79A-C (as reserved by OLCI) aboard Tinkerbelle beckoned and fizz or juice was offered within a couple of minutes. First experience of V-port impressed. So impressed that I watched all 6 episodes of Little Britain. Twice. [:D]

Drinks service was offered soon after take-off, which was almost on time, but, as I was driving on arrival in Boston, I gritted my pearlies and opted for orange juice. [:#] Mrs T availed herself of a large G&T; after all, she was only navigating on arrival.

Sausage and mash for me (yum yum) with some almost passable red and roast chicken for Mrs T (it was OK) was followed by the brandy and baileys run. The run was interrupted by my plaintive can I have a soda water please [:#]

The uneventful flight landed a few minutes early and bags appeared within a couple of minutes of arrival at the carousel, minus a bag tag (but that has been covered elsewhere) and we were off to the Alamo rental counter. After a fruitless search we discovered that Alamo, in common with other rental companies, does not have a desk at Logan. So since when did on airport mean that you had to lug your bags onto a shuttle bus for a 10 minutes ride to the depot [?] Never mind, we got there. After rejecting the first car which had a couple of broken switches on the dashboard, I got a brand new (4.5 miles on the clock) Chevy Impala. Off to the hotel and drink, dinner, shower, shampoo etc and so to bed.

Next morning bright and early and it was off to Toronto (another first) for a couple of days which included a visit to Niagara Falls (first). WOW!!! [^] Back to Boston for 5 days exploring this fabulous city if you havent been there, GO. Did the Duck Tour (thanks for the advice Nick) AND the trolley tour. Both were magnificent in their own ways. We also walked for miles and miles and miles Wasnt too impressed with the beggars though, who appeared on almost every street corner. Still, the same could be said I suppose for San Francisco or Paris or London, so I guess it is just a fact of life. We didnt even get put off by the Big Dig, which, FYI, is due to be completed by next summer. My abiding memories of Boston will be: cleanliness, friendly people, baked scrod at Legal Seafoods, beef sandwiches at Quincey Market and the sight of the present Mrs Treelo driving the Duck on the Charles River.

Next was the AMTRAK Acela Express (first) to New York City (first). Impressed by the train, comfortable, clean and on time. Wouldnt worry if I never saw New York again. In fact I dont think I have ever been in a city with so many ignorant, arrogant pedestrians or impatient, reckless drivers. [n] Took a 5_ hour city tour, which I would recommend to anyone. The lively and informed tour guide really got his message over and the tour is worth every penny. If you are off to this city for the first time, do it. New York City Tours was the outfit and the tour guide was Sam, who introduced himself as _ Scottish and _ Russian Jew! Boy did he know his stuff.

And so endeth the outbound trip.

Thanks for that Treelo. [y][y]

Lots of great memories returned as I read it.

I am particularly interested in your Amtrak experience.. we are doing a 'Redsox run' in Sept, and will probably fly back out of JFK (for the CH [:D] ). Where, and how far in advance, did you book you tickets? Any rail advice gratefully received.

I know what you mean about the beggars.. there are a lot of them in Beantown, [:(!] but I don't (generally) find them too aggressive - at least compared to some of their UK counterparts.

How did you find the border crossings into Canada? I have heard stories of fairly lengthy queues.

Thanks again.

AMTRAK is easy peasy. I booked just after Christmas on the AMTRAK site. On the day of departure we pitched up at South Station around an hour before the ETD. Just inside the station we were approached by an AMTRAK Redcap who whisked away our cases letting us enjoy one last Beantown coffee without cumbersome bags and then redeem out voucher for tickets. We met our Redcap around _ hour before departure time and were escorted to the 'quiet car' (no loud talking, no cell phones etc) and were invited to 'go sit' while the nice Mr Redcap loaded our bags. Absolutely no hassle whatsoever, and the cafe car isn't too bad either [:D]

There were no queues either way at the Canadian border, merely a stop to have our passports stamped.

Hope, this helps Nick. [:)]

Great report Treelo - yes Niagra has that 'wow' factor doesnt it - and they say that its only a half the water coming over now compared to 10 years ago ( or something like that) and the stories of all the people felt the need to go down the falls in a barrel or whatever - madness.

Did you stay there or just visit, because the thing I didnt like was the Canadian town of Niagra which reminded me of a poor quality Blackpool - ( yep that good!!)[xx(]

Totally agree with your view of the town Mark. We did not stay, but 'toured it' from Toronto. Had a nice Catch of the Day lunch at the Secret Garden Restaurant though [^]
