Going to a good friend's 40th do tonight. Bought him a rather nice (if predictable) hip flask, but would really like to put a wise, witty, pithy or just down right amusing inscription on it. Other than the utterly uninspiring 'life begins' thing, anyone got any suggestions?

I saw this quote:

Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.

A friend of ours insisted it wasn't his 40th birthday, rather his Thirty-Tenth.

My twenties are a bit of a haze too. Although, isn't that the way it's meant to be...?

Decided on:

"May you die in bed at 95,
shot by a jealous wife"

Should suit my mate's sense of humour...

I'm assuming your friend is a male.

If not how about 'At 20 you made the men pause, at 40 its the menopause for you'

Very good, but he is a fella. Anyway, forget pithy quotes, what I need now is a hangover cure (oh, if only there really was one...).

V8 juice - containes tomatoes which are anti - oxidants and get rid of the toxins in your body faster (i.e alcohol!)

Or if you can get it the great Glaswegian cure - flat Irn Bru !

Vegetable juice? I think that would rid me of more than just toxins. My bacon sarine (with tomato) may have only cost me £1.20, but I'd like to keep hold of it for a little longer.

I can, however, stand testament to the revitalising effects of Irn Bru (is it really made from girders?). Not sure about letting it go flat though...

mdvipond,
At 40 I realized it was time to stop messing around and get serious about living life. At 50 (right after 9/11) I wondered how much longer I'd be around -- paraphrasing John Lennon, my time was ticking by while I was thinking rather than living.

Hopefully your friend can know right now how important it is to just live!

Regards and take good care of that beautiful child of yours,
Chuck-

Hi Chuck, wise words indeed. Although considering the amount of foaming ale that was consumed last night - and if he's feeling anything like me - my friend may be thinking less of how important it is to live right now and more how he wishes he were dead. ;) I know, we'll all feel better soon...

And my 'beautiful child' thought it would be fun to use daddy as a trampoline at 7 this morn, which did very little for my already fragile constitution. Bless 'er.
