This one appears to have slipped by very quietly

A woman has received and out-of-court settlement from QANTAS after she alleged that a screaming child left here bleeding from her ears and deaf.

Artice in Daily Mail

<Mod hat off>

In my view this just opens the flood gates for more claims, and the other passengers will end up paying for it.

<Mod hat on>

The subject of children on aircraft stirs passions on both sides, but please try to keep on-topic and friendly.

‘Had it not been for that, I would have dragged that kid out of his mother’s arms and stomped him to death.

Whilst I may not like children this is a disgusting comment to make and if I was QANTAS would have refused any payment.

In any case why sue the airline and not the parents?

I imagine Qantas have reached a settlement because it's far easier and cheaper than going to court. Personally I can't see how Qantas could be held responsible.

The whole issue of children on flights was discussed on BBC Breakfast this morning and reference was made to the QANTAS case

That's where I saw/read it (TV on in the office, but silent and with subtitles).

THIS is the background to the article. I'm just waiting for a repeat to get a link for the video.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

I agree with Tonty, I can't stand ill behaved children, particularly on a long haul - however, this is just another instance of the parents abdicating responsibility for thier own bundle of joy.

Quantas staff have no responsibility for the child, not unless it was an UnMin.

Sound can be a weapon

A scream can be an extremely loud noise and can cause harm at short distances.

For each doubling of the distance, the level decreases by 6 dB
Conversely half the distance and the noise level increases by 6dB.

    85 beginning of hearing damage, earplugs should be worn
    120 discomfort starts at 120 db
    128 loudest human scream measured at a distance of 8 feet 2 inches
    130 ear pain may occur during exposure to a 130 db noise
    133 gunshot- ear level, may vary greatly to size and type of gun,
    duration converted to one second, peak level may reach 140-160 (p)
    134 loudest human scream converted to a distance of 4 feet
    137-140 human ear all frequencies are painful
    140 loudest human scream converted to a distance of 2 feet
    140 eardrum rupture may occur during exposure to a 140 db noise
    140 extremely damaging to hearing no matter how short the time exposure
    146 loudest human scream converted to a distance of 12 inches
    160 eardrum rupture occurs at about 160 db
    198-202 human death from sound (shock) wave alone
So not a small issue.
The damage described could have happened!

Perhaps such weapons should not be allowed, particularly in UC cabins :w
