Thanks preiffer - thats a relief as I have decided to transfer much of my travel to them for the next few months (both personal and professional) - just experienced a few exceptional flights in UCS pver the last few weeks, so booked a shed load more. Very impressed to be honest - and even more so if I can wear velour !!

Glider Pilot, who posted the original thread, is still on safari so a bit difficult for him to to post. What I can feed back on his behalf though is that he was indeed upgraded - from BA Ec to WT+ [y] The flight was wide open, he has no Exec Club status and by no means was expecting an upgrade. I'd asked a friend of mine (in BA) to insert a "suitable for upgrade" comment in the system but, given the extremely quiet flight we really didn't think this would influence anything. He enquired politely at check-in, was told "unlikely" but was lucky enough to get the pleasant beep as his boarding pass went through the machine at the gate :)

My only experience of a BA Op Up was on a WT reward ticket ORD-LHR. The earlier flight in the day had gone tech so I was pushed up to NCW (in ~2002).

As expected, this HAS driven me to book in higher classes since, yet curiously not with BA! LOL

However when I was a Blue or Silver member (which is useless for upgrades with BA and much else IMHO) I rarely got an upgrade.

There is a school of thought that silver card holders get upgraded more than gold, the reasoning that the silver card holder is not totally hooked on BA and the gold is.In my personal experience neither has worked for me.A BA silver card is a useful piece of plastic, J lounge access across the entire OW network isn't a bad benefit particularly on AA domestic tickets.

I'd asked a friend of mine (in BA) to insert a "suitable for upgrade" comment in the system

I will drop you an email next time I am not upfront:D

26 flights with VS this year, and 1 Operational Upgrade to Boston to UC. I guess I am just unlucky. My other work colleagues somehow manage 75% of their flights with VS being upgraded and I fly more than they do. I must be doing something wrong.

In a few weeks I'm off on BA to Singapore, my reason for changing to BA is the lack of a PE option on SQ.

Also, the BA flight to New York in NNCW in August was great, despite BA's delays.

I'll report back here if I strike it lucky.
