This is BA's new hand baggage allowance - much more generous than before!

British Airways customers can carry the following as hand baggage from all worldwide destinations and the six UK airports listed above:

*
One bag no bigger than 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm (22 inches x 17.5 inches x 9.85 inches) (including wheels, pockets and handles)
*
In addition, one briefcase or laptop-sized bag
*
A maximum hand baggage weight of 23Kg applies and customers must able to lift the bag into the overhead lockers in the aircraft cabin unaided.

Only problem is getting 23kg into the overhead locker could be a little difficult if you are short like me.:D

Does that mean you can only check-in 6 Kgs though [:o)]

...me thinks someone at BA hasn't proof read that bit of text [:w]

The more you take on board, the less you check in, the less BA have to pay for baggage handling.

You've seen them too then? With two giant rollaboards, a laptop bag and a 'fanny pack' :D

I'd love to see the passengers turning up with 23kgs of hand luggage plus checked bags. Crikey!

Thanks,
Sarah

Oh yes, I've seen them - it never fails to amaze me what some Americans consider to be a carry on bag! That said, I cannot blame them if they are flying internally - must save then some time at their destination.

That is a very generous hand baggage allowance from BA - wonder if VS will relax their rules at all, as even the LCC's over here allow more than 6kg for hand baggage.

Seen, bashed about by and verbal ear ache too. Once opened the overhead, above my, empty, row and out falls the contents of a local Wal-Mart. One bag had dried fruit like sultanas that proceeded to fall like a lumpy shower on my head.

I think you would have to fill a bag of size 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm with some heavy stuff to make it 23kg ! .... :) mind you I guess there will be a fair few who give it a good go !

Cheers

It's amazing how much bacon, sausage, black pudding, scotch pies and HP sauce you can fit into hand luggage especially on BA. All essential ingredients for an ex-pat living abroad:D

I think BA have done this because in November they will become extremly tight on their checked baggage policy.
Link to page,, info on this is near the bottom of the page.

We understand that there are times when you will need to exceed this limit. Therefore, from November 2008, a flat fee of £25 GBP will be applied to bags weighing more than 23kg (51lbs). This charge is to cover the additional handling that bags weighing over 23kg (51lbs) can attract. Until this charge is implemented, we will continue to accept a single piece of baggage weighing up to 32kg (70lbs) without charge.

This was virtually the same BA hand baggage policy before the one bag security scare.Only difference was no max weight at all was mentioned before, your bags had to fit in the gauge and you had to be able to lift it into the overhead bin.

I thought there was some rule that limited the weight of hand luggage due to safety, something along the lines of it falling out in heavy turbulence or a potential hazard in case of emergency landing/exiting the a/c. Surely a stupidly heavy bag in the overhead lockers could be potentially dangerous?

All in small jars of course therefore increasing the incremental weight of packaging [}:)]

This is a scary thought. I am now very worried about my next flight to Africa. The Africans seem to carry luggage that makes most Americans look like total amateurs. I will make sure that i am not the first to open an overhead locker.[:?]
