I was in the unfortunate position of being downgraded on a revenue fare from WT+ to WT on my flight yesteerday from Sao Paolo to LHR - an 11 hour flight in WT+ is not great but a damn sight better than WT. Check-in said that I would have been upgraded (or probably more likely someone else would have been) but Club was also full.

Unfortunately I was connecting from Rio and therefore checked in last (and was denied on line check in). In addition the flight originated in Buenos Aires so it was pretty much full before it arrived in Brazil.

I've been trawling FT and here looking for guidance on compensation and reimbursment and thought I'd ask for any other advice here.

I was offered (and accepted) 75 pounds - as a preloaded electon card. My view was that this was compensation but not reimbursment - a fact confirmed when I asked if there would still be a refund to the company (our client) that paid for the ticket. I believe that the reimbursement is 75% of fare (I assume this is 75% of half the return fare (ie. one way) - The full fare was around 1200. I would hope that BA would not consider the compensation to be offset against the reimbursement but I would still be tempted to get the company to apply for refund even if it might (unlikely) mean I have to repay the 75.

There will still be a stiff letter on the way to BA as I felt strongly that I as disadvantaged from the word go as I was connecting (late arival in San Paulo) and could not check in on-line until 4 hours after check-in opened for the Buenos Aires passengers. I know the business reasons for over-booking but it is certainly not nice when it happens - especially on a long flight such as this.
