New V-Flyer Style

This is not going to be popular, but..

Just got back from an extended lunch, logged on..new style V-Flyer.

What I like(d) about V-Flyer was the idenpendant, non commercial approach, ie a real unbiased forum. Now we have a 3/4 screen site leaving the right hand side free for distracting adverts.

Look, I (and I am sure many others) are happy to pay a small subscription to keep V-Flyer what it was - this new style is just too commercial.

Appreicate I may be in a minority here, but I just don't like this in your face new style.

Fair comment.

Obviously the banners are there to support the running costs, but I tend to agree that they're a little distracting. I might switch them off for a while, to test the water.

The best way to support the site without advertising would be to buy a membership kit (although I have no plans to make this a members-only site!)

Well you could switch to FireFox and use adblocking?

I like the new style site, I think its great. Yeh, its a shame about the adverts - but what can you do? I'd rather have this great site with a couple of ads, than not have it at all.

I have moved this topic to the V-Flyer Website forum coz that's what it is about.

As long as there aren't any f$%**ing pop-ups it's fine.

Looks ok pix, just going to take a little bit of getting used to. I'll reserve judgement until then

I like the site I think - it doesnt work to well on a 1400 x 1050 resolution. The font though used for 'the whole flying wwith Vir....' is awful

Have to admit didn't really notice the adverts - but then think that could because i have used Adblock in Firefox. Oh no, just checked in IE and pages look the same.

All fine and dandy for me.

On my laptop at 1024/768 resolution, the font on the "profile register active topics " etc is very small, and the standard font seems small too. On the screen size of 800 X 600 is fine

Just increased that to the original size...

Another vote here for Firefox with the Adblock extension - in fact I believe I mentioned this many moons ago at the first V-Flyer social .

Firefox has just been released as Version 1.00 (ie it's now a proper release). Have a look at:

I also mentioned at the social about the icon not appearing in the tab on Firefox, which Decker has raised in the other thread...

I think I've arrived at a solution I'm reasonably happy with. On one hand the banners are necessary to keep the site 'on air'. Equally, a regular visitor doesn't want to be bothered by nagging banners. So, if you're a registered user of the forum (not necessarily a paid up member, just a registered user), and you have set the forum to 'remember you', the site will recognise the cookie and disable the banner ads.

That way, the casual visitor who's just 'passing through' will see ads. A registered user won't see ads.

As a side benefit, this might also encourage a few more registrations in the forum, and see some more folks joining in the conversations

Of course, there's also nothing stopping you supporting the site's costs by getting yourself a membership kit. The luggage tags are really quite cool...
