As I got myself a new convertible this year, the annual summer holiday was decided as a road trip to Tuscany. We found a fantastic apartment in a converted palazzo on a hill top near Voltera on the interweb and planned a route through France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and of course Italy. Two overnights were planned in, one near Strasbourg, the other in Como.

The drive down was a dream, the car never missed a beat, even when cruising on the autobahn at 140MPH[:0] legally. Driving through the mountains was spectacular and very different to the scenary we're used to at home.

As per previous trips we had a little fun with some Italians who don't seem to be able to resist trying to overtake you even if they're turning off 100m down the road. I've never been able to work that one out but remedy seems to be to make sure you're the one doing all the overtaking.

Italy as usual was a dream, the food, people and places were just as we remembered from previous trips and the weather was fantastic for the whole 3 weeks we were away in the 30s most days with 1 evening of rain. The apartment was even better than the pictures suggested and as it was about 2 kilometers from anything else, very peaceful. Just what we wanted, sprinkled with a few hectic day trips to Florence, Pisa etc.

As usual, when you're enjoying yourself time flys by and so we had to make our way home this time stopping in Chamonix and Troyes. Apart from an hours delay at the Mont Blanc tunnel we had no problems on the way home.

We did follow a Ferrari 360 Modena for a few miles through some tunnels on the way to Mont Blanc and it sounded wonderful, even the wife said she was impressed but when she realised that her tone may have been too encouraging she let out those immortal words, 'no you can't have one'. Ah well, maybe one day.

All in all it was a good trip and one I'd recommend if you've not done it before. It takes a bit longer than flying but you get to see so much more.

Thanks
