After a pleasant week meeting up with some friends it was off to Memphis and Nashville for a few days. Having checked expertflyer I knew the flight was going to be busy so used on-line check in as soon as opened.Having parted company with Sally (the all singing all dancing Mustang) we headed to the NWA desks to drop off the bags.
NWA (like many US carriers) now charge for carrying bags ($15 for the first $25 for the second)but the nice check -in agent generously waived the charges as we were 'visitors' to the USA.Bags dumped we had a bit of time to kill so went for a quick bite to eat before heading towards security.
Until recently MCO has been my least favourite US airport (this has now been usurped by the vileness that is known as MIA)-this has probably been because every flight I've taken from there previously has been with either VS or BA ,and there have been hoards of badly behaved Brits and their equally badly behaved offspring maurauding about. This time I was pleasantly surprised- the airport itself is actually OK (admittedly not a Brit in sight). We headed towrds security where things were moving fairly quickly. This came to an abrupt standstill when one of our carry-on bags raised some concern and we after much deliberation by several TSA agents, we were asked to step to one side for secondary screening. The agent who dealt with us was actually very pleasant and explained that several items which could not be identified needed to be examined manually.Having unpacked the bag she was wholly satisfied with the contents (a whole load of obscure parts for a '53 Oval Beetle [:w])and thanked us for our patience.
We headed off to the gate and after 20 mins or so boarding commenced.Priority boarding was enforced and 5 mins later general boarding commenced. In one word, it was chaotic (think easyjet only worse). Most of the passengers had loads of oversized baggage and once on board the reason for the scrum became apparent, as all the overhead lockers were fit to bursting and there wasn't an empty seat to be seen.
The cabin interior of our Airbus 320 was grim- grey upholstery that was threadbare and dirty and the cabin crew who looked much the same (grey and grim). The seats were like sitting on concrete with about as much space as Ryanair give you. The loos looked like they hadn't been cleaned in days either[:$]. Luckily the flight was to be just over an hour and a quarter or so, and following a hasty round of drinks we were descending into Memphis.
Disembarkation was swift, and after the marathon trek from the gate we arrived at baggage reclaim just as the claxton sounded and the belt started up. Our bags were amongst the first off and we were in the car depot 10 mins following that.
In summary NWA were pretty grim and I'm in no hurry to use them again if there's any alternative.

Oh dear, I guess the flight wasnt great but pretty on par for many when considering NWA. I hope you had a great time in MEM to make up for the flight?

Thanks,

Sarah, Memphis was a bit of a double edged sword. The fab bits were Graceland (I'm not an Elvis fan but loved it - it's all quite poignant) and Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ (yum yum...). Sun Studio was worth a visit as was the Lorraine Motel/ Museum of Civil rights. The Gibson factory/showcase was a bit of a disappointment(Nashville's is better) and Beale Street truly underwhelming. Memphis itself felt quite menacing with lots of uniformed and plain clothes police around (particularly around the Beale Street area). We also drove over to Tunica (Miss) to visit the casinos (felt a lot safer than downtown Memphis). In hindsight one night in Memphis would have been enough and I'd have rather had more time in Nashville (which was fab).

Many thanks for this DragonLady. I'll be in Nashville on a work trip in about 2 weeks time (my first visit). I'm flying in to MCO with VS, then driving to Fort Lauderdale where I'm staying for 2 nights before flying MIA-BNA with AA. On the way back I'm flying BNA-MCO with Southwest and then home with VS after a night in the airport Marriot. I'm pleased to hear you rate Nashville higher than Memphis - any other hints or tips on my itinerary warmly welcome as I don't know this part of the US at all.

Yea the AA MIA-BNA tends to be a Boeing 737-800. Nice plane.

And for all you OneWorlders: AA reopened the BNA Admirals Club. Pretty nice too. And not crowded.

Nashville is better than Memphis :) Just is.

Thanks for the reply, DL. I have long wanted to go to MEM to see Graceland (I'm not really an Elvis fan either, but thought it would still be great to see/experience) so its good to hear that you enjoyed that. Thanks also for the Nashville tips, which \I ma sure will be useful to others. [y]

Thanks,
Sarah

Thanks for the TR DL.

Thanks for the tips, I was tempted to go to Memphis as one of the things I would have like to seen is the Gibson factory as well as the live music. Looks like Nashville is the better option.[y]

The Gaylord is a little way from Downtown (approx 10 miles) but handy for The Grand Old Opry, Opry Mills (similar to Sawgrass Mills in Miami) and the airport.I'm sure the hotel will offer some sort of shuttle to Downtown. If you want to see a show at the GOO make sure you book tickets ahead.Downtown is full of bars, most with (good) live music, dancing (line[:0]), country AND western karaoke (I kid you not) and is generally safe (unlike Memphis).Have fun[:)].
Sarah, I'll post a separate review of Graceland to try and tempt you[8D].
