After a couple of days at the Rather disappointing Drake it was time to leave Chicago, not been for quite a few years and really enjoyed it,even found another couple of Blues Brothers locations.

Taxi dropped outside I think T5 at ORD, LX being right next to the BA desks.Check-in was suppose to open at 2.45pm it was 2.44pm.There were a family of DYKWIAs at the front of the F line and a couple in the J line and loads in the Y line.As the clocked hit 2.45 the red coated staff appeared Mr DYKWIA pounced on the poor women behind the f desk before she even logged into the system.Mrs JP and I tutted to each other and rolled our eyes. The lady on the second business desk beckoned us forward.Mr and Mrs JP we have been expecting you here is a letter with today's flight details, you have the new seats and Aircraft. After completing check-in she said she would accompany us through security and to the lounge. We were whisked to the front of the queue the LX lady holding all the BPs and then straight into the lounge, just make yourself comfortable and one of my colleges will escort you on to the aircraft. Now thats what I call fast track, the lounge was J one side and F the other small but adequate.

We were the only residents the DYKWIA family much to our pleasure were in the J side.I caught up on a little work with the free wifi and generally relaxed with a couple of 1/4 bottles of Freixenet, much much better quality than what is sold in the UK.Time pasted and 1 other couple joined us in the F side, the lady from the desk said it was time for boarding to the other couple and they left. Our check-in miracle worker appeared and said she would be escorting us onto the aircraft and we were the only F PAX on the flight.Straight to the front of the line thanked by name profusely by the gate staff for flying LX F and then down our own personal F airbridge.Thats what I call priority boarding. The A330-300 cabin is the same 2 rows of 4 seats we again had the front pair.

The thing that struck me was the massive TV must be at least 20'.

The light wood trim looked good and the immediately delivered Champagne and canapes even better.

I think the Fizz was Mumm pre departure but it changed to Louise in the air.Crew all introduced themselves and it was confirmed we were the only 2 PAX,not that it would have made any difference as the outbound cabin was full and service had been perfection. We were on our way after about 4 glasses I had a play with the seat an all singing, dancing and massaging thing worked by this box of tricks with multiple screen menus.

I started with a Bloody Mary when we were underway.

The trolley soon appeared groaning under the weight of food on it.Lobster, scallop, quail and salmon the FA assured us there was the same amount again loaded if we cleared this lot.I opted for a sampler again which came with half a lobster.

Then onto the Salad.

Another fillet again brilliant quality.

At this point Mrs JP threw in the towel and had her bed made at the insistence of the crew, she usually likes to make it up herself so as not to bother anyone.
I carried on eating and drinking. The cheese selection was again top notch including the finest Emmental I have ever tasted.

By this time I was stuffed to Mr Creosote level, you have to try the sweet Mr JP, but I'm full, well just try on spoon full and leave the rest.Try a spoon full I did and then I finished the lot it took about 15 minutes but it was exquisite.

I sat back and tried to watch Watchmen for about the 10th time.

But sleep beckoned, again my bed was made up and that was it.Next thing I knew there were crew running through the cabin apparently someone had set the smoke alarm off in the F loo mmmmm Mrs JP wasn't in her seat.Apparently LX smoke detectors don't like spray on deodorant.Mr JP returned having had to open the loo door in nothing much, she said the crew where mortified when she exited properly after changing out of the sleep suit. She also spotted all the breakfast item laid out just for the 2 of us. I managed a couple of cups of fantastic Coffee and some OJ but the feast the night before had scuppered Breakfast.

A few observations, the new seat is far too hard, I would take the old design over it any day.Food and service top notch, ground handling brilliant.Sleep suits much better quality than BA or VS on par with QF. Amenity kits where made by Bally very useful, in fact I've retired my old BA Anya Hindmarch in favor of one of these. All in all a wonderful experience the way F travel should be.

Good God how do you fit it all in? The food (and service) look fantastic, but I think I would have waived the white flag along with Mrs. JP. So much food!

Lovely report!

Thanks,
Sarah

JP, you and I need to do a flight toegether one day, we both seem to have that second stomach thingy [:p]

I haven't seen airline food that looked that good in years, maybe a decade or so.

Are we sure Mrs Jp wasn't grabbing a quick one then covering it with spray on deodorant ???? and why haven't I thought of going that route.

Mrs Scrooge managed to set one of them off using curling tongs.....I have no idea how she did it or why she was doing it, but the crew did not seem that amused.

JP that first cabin looks fantastic - really appeals to me with the slickness and coolness of it. And the food, amazing and astounding.

I recently had an option to use LX for an India trip, I wish I had taken it and will absolutely do so next time.

What service. If VS could be 50% as good it too would excel!

Looks really, really good, and would be even better without that 1970's looking paper doyley. [;)]

(Admittedly, the doyley serves a purpose, to stop stuff sliding around and to pickup spills. Maybe it could just be a bit more contemporary!)

Excellent flying restaurant review! Looks like a truly top notch product.

Slightly O/T, why did you find the Drake disappointing? We were due to stay there at Easter, but we had to change the booking to the Conrad (location excellent, otherwise meh) when the Drake wouldn't allow us an extra night on HHonors points. I've always wondered what we missed.

Excellent location (Billy Goat Tavern very close), rooms excellent, no views, no exec lounge, possibly the meanest complimentary breakfast ever...

That sounds about like the view from our room and the the same Breakfast as The Drake.Only thing I will give them is a 3pm Check-out agreed with no hassle.

Is the Billy Goat Tavern the one down the stairs?

That's the one. No natural daylight, two types of beer, light brown and dark brown. Not a place to ask for a dry martini. Tom thought it very cool as it was the only place we went to where they didn't ask him for ID.

It is cool I agree - oh and Chicago bars are usually ruthless with IDs, even as you get obviously aged!

Another really fine, well located and swish hotel in Chicago is the Sofitel. In fact, I think most Sofitels are very good though the one in New York can be ruinously expensive!

Thank you for the great TR, It all looks amazing. I can also vouch for Slink09's recommendation of the Sofitel in Chigago.
