And it's yet another daft question from me.... when charging a UK purchased laptop/notebook in the US, do you have any problems with the difference in voltage? I'm guessing (hoping) not, since it seems laptops charging leads seem to incorporate a transformer - is that right, or would it onvolve all kinds of weird trickery, not to mention extra bits to buy???

You shouldn't have a problem - the transformer should handle the differences in input voltage (the label should say something like "Input 100-240v"). All you'll need is an adaptor for the US plug socket.
