How about a Kia Sorento. It won the best overall 4x4 in 4x4 mag in 2004, it has also won the best towing vehicle award by the shed dragers. To top that it has just won the best 4x4 for ownership in the JD power survey. 3 year warranty and all the toys, including satnav for £21k if you shop on autotrader.com. Traded mine in 3 months ago for a Ssangyong Rexton as i needed a bit more space in the bsck and fancied a change. Big mistake ! The engine on the rexton expired 5 weeks ago after 4k miles !! been waiting 3 weeks now for new engine to come from Korea and could be waiting 3 weeks more. It is a nice car to drive but for £26K the aftersales is crap. Soon as it's fixed i am selling it and getting a pathfinder.

Any way back to the Sat Nav. I have been using Tom Tom for 3 years now on an ipaq and think its brill. Moved to a car pc based system in the rexton which is even better. Satnav, car phone, dvd player and 40GB worth of MP3 music with an indash touch screen for £400.

First, can I add my 2p worth to the Landrover debate - I have had 5 range rovers and only had one problem. (that was a clutch stuck open - led to the extremely unusual sight of my normally reliable landy being towed home by my, er, reliable TVR....). However, they used to be great value, having fantastic depreciation till around 18k - or 3 years - at which point they were cheap. Not now, however, too many footy players keeping the second hand values high :(

Also - as I discovered after buying a portable nav for my last rangey - the nav will not work through the heated front screen !

The tomtom range does get a good name, and the newer ones are quite reasonably sized - however having found a car with even better depreciation than a Rangey, I don't need one - its fitted in the BMW 745i. BTW - TMC - yes, you need a TMC disk in the car, but I found on a recent trip to Europe that I had to scan the radio stations to allow the TMC to re-find a TMC channel on the way over, and on the way back (just choose Classic FM for a minute and it should be sorted.) As for paying another 165 quid just to get the use out of what was probably a 3 or 4 grand option - there is another way. Not that I would ever suggest joining Easynews and downloading the disks illegally - that would be very very bad. But good value for 10 dollars a month....
