Is this access free if you are in the lounges, and is the signal good enough to loiter outside the lounge? [}:)]

Hi Simon,

Don't know if it is a free access, I imagine it most probably is. I am sure someone will be able to confirm shortly. ...as for loitering... ;)

My guess would be that it probably isn't, as I think BAA earn a tidy sum from the Hot Spot providers to the rights to operate in the airport.

Ironically most lounges offer free wired internet access via their own PC, but with the aid of one of those travel routers I've just bought, you could give everyone in the lounge free wireless access while you're passing through... Not that I'm encouraging anyone should fiddle with a lounge operator's equipment, of course. Oo-er. ;)

I was in the Servisair lounge in T3 a couple of weeks back and the WiFi was certainly not free. I resorted to using my 3G card as the WiFi was pretty expensive from what I recall.

Sometimes it is possible to use another 'free' connection in another lounge (JFK is a case in point with the one of the non VS lounges having free WiFi).

I've just bought an XDA mini, wifi enable smartphone, so its now much easier to loiter and look for free wifi. And once I've found it I can run Skype and look just like anyone else on the phone. [8D]

I was in the Servisair lounge in Edinburgh yesterday afternoon, and can report there IS a wi-fi connection, but it is NOT free.

It's provided by T-Mobile, and offers a few options for payment.

-If you already a T-Mobile customer, you can get online quickly (after texting t-mobile for a password) and effectively pay as you go. However long you are connected for is added to your mobile phone bill. Cost 75p per 10 minutes period.

-Alternatively, you pay by credit card for a set period of access..
1 hour - £5
3 hours - £7.50
24 hours - £13
7 days - £30
30 days - £45
(Though I assume this access is transferable across T-mobile hotpots wherever you may be.. this isn't explicitly stated though.)

In summary, I just read the papers and drank wine instead! :)

Thanks for that McCoy, this is all part of my research into whether Amex Platinum card with PP lounge access is worth the cost. And to me free wifi would be a good justification.
And without it, I guess I'm better off using the regular hotspots around the terminals.

T-Mobile also have a roaming agreement with BT Openzone, so if you have one of their accounts, you can log on using your existing wifi agreement too [y]
