400Gb external hard drive

I am sure that some of the techies on here can get a better price than this (Highflyer, just batter those baby err blues?? ) but PC World are selling an external USB2 400GB hard drive from Packard Bell for £149.99. Though that was a good deal so i bought one.

Don't get me started on the monkeys that are sales reps in PC World! When i was an Account Manager i had to go and visit the Watford branch on a regular basis and i hated it, i used to think up the most complex technical questions to ask the monkeys just to see their reaction!

Anyway, enough of my ranting, that is a very good price and part of the reason why PC World do so well, because they are very competitive. I use a local Mom & Pop store for all my PC needs, their 400GB USB 2.0 HD (Freecom) comes in at £175 standard store price (without baby blue fluttering) so i think thats a downright bargain! (They do a lovely LAN Drive for £180 that i am eye-ing up)

So, what are you doing with all that storage Alan? Other than tempting me to buy more PC bits??

Welllll,
I am going to9 use it for (currently) storing video from the camera before burning it to DVD. I went for the 400Gb as I have a High Def Sony digital video camera and when Blu-Ray comes out I can burn to them, but need the space for the raw HD footage
Also, for holding photos again before burning to DVD

I am soooo going to beat up on my IT department - they are having a cow about building me a 7TB database - I priced the disk space at about 30k based on buying a bank of Dell PCs, each with a 250Gb drive, but these 1Tb come in much better than that.

OK - I know that is not the way to build a data warehouse, but it is a damm good way to demonstrate that disk space is pretty cheap these days.

Word of caution re disks. Think long and hard before putting everything onto one disk and then treating it as a safe repository. Burn your important stuff onto a DVD as soon as possible. Sadly, many desk top disks are not fabulously reliable - there are many sad tales of people losing very important/precious videos, images, photos, music etc, because it wasn't securely backed up.
