{Very off-topic i know, but the geeks here may be interested}

Up until 7th March Apple techies claimed it wasn't going to be possible. Apparently they were wrong. It is now possible to install Windows XP on a new Intel Dual-Core based Mac (iMac, Mac Mini or MacBook Pro).

So if you want to look all cool and trendy with a Mac notebook but can't cope with Mac OS now you can use good old Windows XP.

Isn't that lovely.

Why would you want to dirty your Mac? I don't get it... [:I]

Replace OSX with XP on a Mac? That's like hanging furry dice in a Bentley! You can do it, and inevitably some people will. But it's not smart: it's taking a good decision and turning it into a bad one.

This will re-kindle the flame wars!

Well said, Jason. [y]

To explain, to a PC user - it'd be like hacking a brand new Wintel machine to make it run CP/M.

Oh no, got that wrong - that'd improve it... [:I][:p]

Let us not forget this small $250m to keep Apple afloat:

But shock horror, I actually quite like some of the Apple products - we don't make hardware, instead leaving it to OEM's and they have to make their cut somewhere too. Mac Hardware on the other hand is very logical, and very aesthetically pleasing.

I saw this topic being discussed internally and it is interesting to see it being done, but a little strange - because of course there is VirtualPC for the Mac which I am told is rather good. I am reliably informed that the Mannion household will be acquiring a new Intel Based Mac or two in the near future. Fine with me to be honest, as I can do my core tasks of use IE, and use Office, and for anything else I can use VPC.

Of course there will still be a tru Windows sever back-end runnign the entire thing :)

Thanks,
Richard

Umm.. How are you going to use IE on your new Mac's, Richard, now you've stopped developing it?

You'll be stuck on 5.23 forever (so long as you can still find the download link... [:?])

I think you'll give up shortly afterwards ;)

By the time VPC has "booted", and you've got into IE7, you'll give up and just click that Safari option and experience a nice browser instead [:p]

(You can keep a VPC session running at all times, but WOW, that eats up system resources. While it's a good tool for those applications that will ONLY run on Windows, it's far from perfect and quite slow...

If you can run an application natively on a Mac, I'd choose that over VPC'ing it any day.

Really Richard, you should let this one go already, after 9 years, it sorta loses its impact ;):D

Ok, have to admit that i've tried IE7 on my work PC ... really didn't like it. The interface just didn't work for me.

As to why run XP on a Mac? Its a challengs, like getting Linux to run on a PS2, PSP and even an iPod.

Secondly its really cool. And thirdly it helps people like me make the jump to Apple hardware. There are core programs I love and use, for example EditPlus which I use for all my web development. This would allow me to have the best of both worlds, and avoid having to use something like Virtual PC. It's virtual - thats the problem.

Just got to pay off Oz now so when I / Dean is in the US I can get me a Mac Mini!!

I have been using Mac OS/X Tiger for the past week in the office and admit to having fallen in love with it. Im going to be investing in a dual core iMac in the near future! (and maybe a powerbook also).

I used to be a real Mac fan, having grown up with, and worked with Apple Macs for most of my formative years, but in the early 90's, like most of us, i made the shift to PCs and Windows.

I am happy to say that Mac is winning me back, OS/X has to be the sexiest but most intuitive O/S that i have used. Everybody is different, but OS/X suits me, its very, very logical and is how i feel an O/S should be. Oh, and did i mention that its darn sexy! Aero/Glass visuals and graphics are fine, but they need to be on top of a good, working O/S in the background.

I will keep at least one or two XP machines in addition to Macs, i have to admit to being a fan of XP as an O/S as i have been using it since 1999 when it was Codename: Whistler, and i know my way round it very well. Although, i would not want to put it on a Mac, its just wrong, as Onionz says, akin to hanging furry dice in a Bentley! Macs were made to run their own OS and PCs for Linux ... or Windows ;)

Still, Mat, i think taking up the challenge sure is a noble one! Id be interested to hear how you get on, mainly because of the EFI issues, but keep us posted ... and let us know when you give up and go back to OS/X!

Thanks,
Sarah

Oh come on. How on earth can an operating system be sexy? [:?] Does it have great curves? No. Does it dazzle you into submission with its eyes? No.

I must admit that on occassion it totally screws you. But surely that just makes it a one night stand?

Good news for those wanting to use OS X but who also need to use a particular app that's only available for windows.

And for me that app is a little Text editor. I found it ages ago, and its fantastic. Lots of editors to highlighting and stuff, but this one just seems to be the best one for ease of use.

The only thing stopping me moving over a a glorified version of Notepad. [B)]
