Hello, just some quick advice needed. Had my nu mac now for about a week. This is my first time using the mac OS have been a windows user all my life. The transfer was easy. However, one slight problem/unsure of. On the right side of my sceen there are "drives" for things like msn messenger, google earth. they only appear when i load the application. google earth doent appear anymore. So my question is, have i installed these programes correctly. I have but their icons into the applications folder and done exactly what it said to in the installation.

Cheers in adance.

Hi there and CONGRATULATIONS on your new mac! Isn't it great?!?!?!?

OK, you're not doing anything wrong - everything is loaded correctly.

You have to physically put Google Eart and the other applications you want to include onto your dock (where all the other icons are). This is what you do:

1) Go to your 'finder' icon (the one with the blue man smiling!)

2) Once opened, on your left hand side click once into Applications

3) Once in Applications, find Google Search (or whichever application you want included into your dock) and drag it directly to the dock.

4) There you go - the icon is now part of the 'dock'. If you don't want it anymore, just drag off the dock and it will show a white puff of smoke. Once you let go it will disappear.

Remember though, that these are just aliases, and your originals are always in the Finder (or Hard Drive)

Don't forget that you can go to the AppleStore in your area and attend 'free' workshops on all the applications! Or if you require one-to-one training then you could always buy ProCare for £79 a year. As well as one-to-one training every week there's loads of other benefits. And last but not leaste you could buy .mac where you can have online training.

YOU GO FOR IT!

I've never seen anything as disgusting as that in my entire life. Macs, loads of them, in a room at Microsoft? [:0][n]

Right, this topic's gone from filthy to obscene. One more comment such as that, and I'll lock it.

So running Windows on a MacBook Pro would be like reading the Torah or the Qur'an in the Vatican while at Mass but would help me switch.

I need a new laptop. My Dell is a POS and cost more to get a various things repaired than is is worth. Also if I bought a new Dell I feel I would be getting less than if I bought a MacBook Pro. Does anyone know of a good forum that talks about MacBooks and other Mac issues? I read an article in MacWorld (IIRC) that gave if a so-so/good review but still said it was lacking in some ways. I reading others feedback is the what motivates my buying action.

I know. It's like buying a new car in the first model year, not a good idea but I want one away. Perfect size for my backpack. And I get the student discount.

What is CA sales tax again?

So I am getting one. Is it worth the extra money for the 2 or 2.16 Ghz processor? Also I sorta want the 8x Superdrive but do not want a 17 inch screen. Does anyone see Apple offering the 8x on 15.4 MacBook soon?

Maybe you could upgrade it yourself, replacing it with one of the Pioneer slot-loaders which are natively supported in OSX? It's not for the faint-hearted, but you can do this on a Mini, and when I got my Mini it was actually cheaper to do this rather than go for Apple's Superdrive, and the Pioneer option was better. Having said that, this is about the only part of my Mini I haven't messed about with yet.

I just don't know easy it is to get into a Macbook. The Mini was a bit tricky - it involved a large metal spatula-like instrument and some force.

Getting into a MacBook is very easy - same as the PowerBook. Putting it all back together perfectly is the very, very, very, very, very hard part... [:0][:I]

Well in four days time you could go to NY to the new Apple Fifth store and buy it at 4am - just because you can.
