Sorry not VS or travel related but......

MS have just released a RC1 version of IE7 - If you have a previous version of IE7 (any beta version) DONT install this latest version as it will screw up Windows XP as it deletes a file called iertutil.dll which is required for a lot of Windows software (including things like system restore and other major programs).

I've managed to get this dll file off my other PC which had IE7 beta 3 on it, but even with putting this dll file in the correct folder, I now cannot use any version or IE (6 or 7) on my PC. Tryed using system restore but as per usual this hasn't worked. Having to use FireFox.

There are lots of reports about this problem already on the web.

Thanks for the heads up, James.

Won't affect us Firefox users though. ;)[8D][}:)]

You could make a slipstreamed XP disc with SP2, so when it happens next time, you'll be able to rebuild quicker :).

Or don't use beta Microsoft software full stop...;)

Well just spent that last 90 mins re-building my HDD....wouldn't mind but I only did this a few weeks ago when I installed a bigger HDD [:w]

I have WinXP SP1 on CD but having gone through the MS Update website, after installing 23 security updates, it's now jumped straight to installing SP2 (which is downloading now) so looks like you dont need to install WinXP SP's sequentially.

At least with an ADSL connection it doesn't take too long these days to update Windows.

I am one ignoramus, but tell me, is Firefox really that good? Is it worth downloading (I assume you can download it?), does it run along IE or would I need to uninstall it?????

IMHO Firefox is soo much better than IE, yes you can download it, here is the link, and you don't have to get rid of IE it is just another programme.

I guess its each to their own, but for me, Firefox has a much better built in Pop up blocker and doesn't have all the useless/pointless extraS that IE has which I never used, and just the look and how it works I prefer.

It is only a small file to download, why not try and it and see what you think, if you don't like it, just use IE again (thats what t'other half did).

Sorry to hear about your troubles mitchja. As a mate once said to me: "Its typical that of Microsoft to f*** things up for everybody!"

A few months ago after wiping my HDD after a viral attack which led to spyware whenever I connected to the Internet before rebooting the PC by itself, I decided to upgrade my OS to XP SP2 since I was still on SP1. I thought I was being clever by doing this because SP2 comes with additional security features and everything should run smoother.

How wrong was I, when I downloaded it and rebooted my PC I could not connect to the Internet at all! After trying many attempts to get it working I decided to 'do the deed' once again under advice from Telewest (being "Well you're just gonna have to re-format your PC again whether you like it or not" [:(!])and it worked fine after that under SP1.

After that I generally don't bother with Windows Updates because I am eventually gonna be asked to download SP2 again, a risk which I'm not willing to take. I'm getting a laptop soon anyway so I'll leave my current PC as it is on SP1. After all 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

Sorry to waffle on about this guys and gals [:#]

Guys and Girls

You all seem to be having lots of trouble with MS !! Why not become a Mac convert like me :D .... Once you have used one you will never want to go back [y]

Bought myself a new MacBook to try out and have never looked back ... wish I had done it ages ago ! The big plus of the new intel based Macs is that you can also run XP on them as well... they will quite happily dual boot.

Just thought I would throw that in to all you disillusioned windows users

Although I can't see myself buying a Mac as a replacement to my current PC, I can see how with Macs you avoid a lot of the problems that come across with PCs.

It's just Mac compatibility with certain software/hardware applications which is keeping me on PCs. Also since I have no expereince on using anything Apple whatsoever (apart from mates' iPods) I might as well stick to what I know best which is Bill Gates' Windows.

And speaking of Mr Gates...

Happy blue screen[}:)]

I'll be getting a MacBook in a few weeks time :)

Once i get that running i think it will goodbye to PC's for a lot of my leisure computer time. And for all the PC/Windows based apps that i may still need to run? Well that is what virtualisation software is for - none of this dual boot nonsense ;)

I tried IE7 and had major issues with it. I had to edit the registry to allow me to uninstall it and reinstall IE6. Wish i had not bothered, though admittedly it was BETA so i should know better.

I stick to Firefox and i am very happy with it. It's all down to choice and personal preference at the end of the day.

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah

Im sure you'll love the MacBook !! is it going to be white or black ?

There is actually a difference in what the outer case is coated in as well as the colour. The white ones mark quite easily (but look really cool [8D])

I wish I could do away with the dual boot but the apps I need to run in windows wont run in any of the 'Virtual' environments available at the moment (forensic software)

As for IE7 .....YUK !!! [n]

High Flyer. I've been a Mac user for years now and have had a series of machines, from PowerBooks to iMacs. My advice to you on your MacBook purchase is this: Wait until Feb!

My girlfriend has a generation 1 MacBook with the intel chip. It is flakey to say the least and we're off to the Apple store today as it has crashed again. In Feb, Apple will release Version 2 of most of their intel based machines (it's their way, in Sept introduce best sellers for Christmas, in Feb release the latest and greatest technology) and I am personally holding out until then!

Interestingly, you can do it now but also waiting until early next year you will be able to duel boot with Windows and Tiger / Leopard (the new Mac OS coming early next year) so mac for fun and windows for work all on the same machine :)

Slipstream, is where the SP has been integrated into the original gold build. So you don't have to install the SP upon installation of the base OS as it has already been integrated.

If you have bought retail media after the launch of XPSP2 in August 2004, then you would have slipstreamed media anyway.

JC, I dont think i can wait till February for my MacBook! I used to be a Mac user till the early 90's, very glad to be going back that way too.

Dual-booting XP is of no interest to me, its like buying a Rolls Royce and putting one of those beaded seat covers in it ;)

Thanks,
Sarah

If one were tasteless enough to buy a roller, I think adding beaded seat covers would merely be an extension of your lack of style.

I've taken the plunge and have just downloaded Firefox Version 1.5.0.7 For those who are worried about it mucking everything up it doesn't. When you've installed it, it asks you whether you want to import bookmarks, favourites etc. from IE and also askes whether you want to make it your default web browser.

I've done so and I've had no problems so far.

I will also recommend that McAfee Site Adviser should be downloaded too. It works on both IE anf Firefox and is free. It alerts you about sites you are viewing and whether its safe for not. Currently it is showing that V-Flyer is safe :) Always nice to know.
