So we've just got back from Toys'r'us and we spotted this years absolute must have gadget, though looks like it is sold out all over the place.

The new range of ultra small mobile laptops by Asus.

or: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC

It has to be seen to be believed. They are 219 at the moment for the 4G model, though sure that will come down a bit more if you look round. It is absolutely ideal for travelling, I need to go and source one now for Sarah as she has fallen in love with it.

It ships with Linux, but you can put Windows on if you want (so that's me covered then [:)]). There are forums all over the place for it such as http://wiki.eeeuser.com too.

Remind me of my old Toshiba Libretto, only a lot faster and cheaper!

Thanks,
Richard

Richard

How right you are.

I was recently on a train and my attention was drawn to a person using it by a couple walking past and the woman saying 'That's what a want for Christmas!)

A nice piece of kit to add to one's computer fleet

Happy shopping

That does look cool [:)]

Hmmm very tempting. The only place I've found any availability so far is eBay and even then there are only a few UK sellers.

I've even found an article on the web where someone has managed to get OS X installed on one as well!!

I'm told that if you try your local Toys'r'us they seem to be getting regular shipments. Might wait to see what the 8G version is sold for.....

My local PC World (Grimsby) has them in stock for collection at £199.99. Saw one there a couple of days ago - might have been tempted if I hadn't just got a new Dell

I think the £199 model has slightly less storage space.

Any reason for waiting for the 2nd gen one? Other than a larger screen I dont see enough to make me wait to get the gadget.

Thanks,

Well, I'm happy enough with my Toshiba Portege R200, coming in at 1.29kg, which I take on holiday with me, but I did like the look of the Eee, just fancied the bigger screen version, especially if they would be launching soon.

If you have a Portege then i guess the Eee is more of a toy or a gadget then.

I usually take my Macbook on holiday which i love to pieces but it takes up a lot of room (especially in relation to the previous hand luggage allowances where taking my laptop was my hand luggage) where as the Eee fits easily into a small handbag and is super portable, and weighs a heck of a lot less than my Mac.

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah

Do you have any problem connecting to wi-fi hot spots?

I am just a little confused by a line from the BBC report:
In truth, there are not that many Wimax-enabled areas anywhere in the world
