Apple launches UK itunes movie store

Confirmed this morning by Apple that they are launching movies for sale and rent on Itunes Store UK.

Been a very, very long time coming.

One has to wonder if the rentals will eat into the dominate position of blockbuster and more recently the DVD mail rental companies.

It depends how they pitch the prices.
It still galls me that we pay a lot more for our iTunes downloads than they do in the US store. [:I]

I think they are pictching at 1.99 or 3.99 for rent. Which is on a par with what you would pay at Blockbuster.

6.99 to purchase or 10.99 for latest release purchase. I think 10.99 is a bit too steep.

But, if you buy through itunes, don't forget 8% quidco cashback also :-) sweetens the deal a little

I still thing it's pants that people bark at apple for these prices. It's not apple, it's the media companies. I hope the investigation by the EU wraps up soon on this front

I would have thought only once the delivery mechanism to a TV based system (rather than the iPod or other portable device) becomes more widespread and the broadband capacity is upgraded. Given the complaints that the poxy quality stuff on YouTube is clogging up the internet, lord only knows what mass downloading of an HD format full length movie would do.

That said, the change is definitely coming. You can see it in the speed with which big name films end up in the 3 for £20 section at HMV. Makes a lot of sense from the renter's perspective too - no 'very long wait' for films any more.
