Well, the day has finally arrived.

Announcing the Intel Powerbook (Now called "MacBook") and the Intel iMac (Called the, ahem, iMac!)

MacBook is now benchmarked at 4x faster than my (latest) 1.67Ghz PowerBook [:0]

Personally, going to hold off until v2 (not keen on playing guinea pig), but looks promising to say the least!

(On a side-note, iLife '06 has just been launched, too)

I'm now trying to save the pennies to make the 'switch' to Mac from PCs ;)[}:)] It just looks, feels, sounds and responds more smoothly than XP [n]

But it is still going to run on OSX right and not WINDOWS!?

Yes, they run OSX Tiger. The only change to software is that people will have to start looking out for the "Universal" logo on it - meaning it works on both PowerPC and Intel based processors.

It actually ships with 10.4.4 + Front Row, neither of which are yet available for existing users to patch/upgrade to.

Because OSX now uses Rosetta, it's able to run both types of coded programs no problem. I think Steve Jobs would stuggle to even consider running Mr. Gate's **** on one of his beloved developments anytime soon.

Do you mean that the application designed to run on the new OS will need to say Universal. So for instance I have a lot of mac apps such as Office and some Movie Edited stuff that currently work on OS X (whatever I am running now, forget off the top of head the actual version)

No - any existing apps will work fine on the new Intel Macs. New applications, however, will gradually be coded more and more for Intel-only operation.

During the transition period (likely to be around 2-3 years), applications that work on both processor technologies will be identified with either "PowerPC" (ie: only IBM/Motorola chips) "Intel" (ie: only Intel chips) or "Universal" (ie: both chips).

At last an Apple computer thats as quick as a PC....Oh hang on it is a PC running Apple software...guess it was the only way to keep up,after the release of the quickest home computer (G5) was proved to be...well slow [B)]....So does this mean that Tiger will be able to run on any Pc?

Hmm... Not quite a fair comparison.

A 1.25GHz PowerPC is proven to operate in Photoshop at 1.5x faster than a 3.8GHz x86 processor...

So now it's an Intel chip at 1.83GHz (and dual core) - well, it wipes it's behind with Wintel toys...

Would love to, but it's a Windows only application. So not only can we not run it, it's also fundamentally flawed...[:w]

well just as a note,we can and have gone back and forth about the PC v Apple thing,we could keep going on about it,but what it will end up being is a Apple v MS battle.

In the end each company will keep trying to one up the other and use the ad budgets to make them look like the best...kind of like the airline biz.

My computer sucks. I was hoping Apple was going to release a 500 dollar notebook, like lots of the rumors were saying, so that I could finally dump this PC. I must say though, I have pumped a lot of money into upgrades, so I may still want to get some life out of it.

I think I like the word powerbook more than macbook...

Mac users (Shakes his head)

I just imagine Mac users houses, full of equipment like Sony Betamax video playes, Laser dic players, with 8 tracks in their Toyota hybrid cars.

Not quite, Alan... Excluding the Prius, all of those items are extinct.

I'd say that PC on your desk is about 1000 times more likely to be classified as defunct/"end of life" sooner than any Mac that we're using right now... ;)

majority of people think Macs are extinct as well [:o)]
Ah what you mean is that IBM type computers will evolve, whereas Mac's will become err, "classics" :D

It is interesting how the two countries look at Macs. In the USA there is more personal use of them, so I am told, wheras in the UK they are perceived as a desktop publishing setup for professional use.

We have both and I hate the mac system, its just personal choice I suppose.

All the ones I saw in the Apple shops in Florida were from other companies (Belkin etc..)

Yes, they did it - but it's not been released for shipping yet. My guess is it'll hit the Apple Store over the next week or so...
