Ben,
Thanks for reminding me of a great time in my life: it was like living inside a three-ring circus to be in San Francisco in the early 1970s. Counter-culture was just beginning in earnest and The Haight, as we called it then, was more a curiosity for national media than for those of us who called SF home. Sure, we knew there was a lot of dope being smoked there; there were probably more "head shops" on each city block in the Haight than anywhere I've ever been. Despite being portrayed in the media as a scruffy, drug-infested denizen the Haight was one of SF's "out there" neighborhoods, displaying a vibrancy that to this day helps define SF as an amazingly cosmopolitan outpost.
