OK, so I decided to use some points to book the CDC from home to LHR.
TO/FROM FROM/TO MILES
London Heathrow or Within 75 miles of the 17,500
*Within a 75 mile radius of arriving/departing US airports when travelling on Virgin Atlantic flights only. Any excess charges due will be calculated and communicated at the time of booking (and paid directly to the car service at time of journey by cash or credit card)
So, living 89 miles away I thought I'd just pay the excess... wait for it £120.00 each way as excess. I thought they'd made a mistake but that was shocking.
