I have tried everything to make a couple of bookings with miles online but it doesnt seem to let me, no matter how I try. I kep getting the "Were sorry page...". Is this a known issue? I assume I have to call the Flying Club to book... if so, Virgin seem to be going backwards.

I thought there was a known problem where the calendar showed dates for rewards but it was actually reverting to paid tickets, so there would be an error when you tried to book.

I find it's always better calling anyway - I don't see it as a step backwards as it's good to have someone there dealing with it.

I think its a step backwards when you once were able to make mile reward bookings online without the need of having to speak to someone. Now I have to call up, be on hold, then speak to someone who (unfortunately) I generally struggle to understand and therefore lack confidence in their ability to make the booking correctly.

Think I will just wait, last time I booked a reward ticket over the phone they booked it to MIA instead of Vegas... I dont know how they get that wrong but they did.

I will admit I've never had that problem when calling the flying club. I've always spoken to an English (or Scottish) person.
In fact, my next trip is a reward flight and I dealt with 2 different women (I called, was offered the flight on the day I wanted but wasn't sure what flight my friend was on so needed to check that before I booked)the first person reserved me a seat on both flights and when I called back an hour later to confirm, spoke with someone else as the first woman was busy. They were both extremely helpful - I was ill and coughing and the second one asked if I wanted to get a drink and she'd call me back - she did and I got on the same flight as my friends.

It's a shame someone booked you on the wrong flight, I don't know if you just called the general line or the FC line, but I've found the FC line to be extremely helpful.
