Just scored SFO-LHR-JHB in UC for $6300 inc taxes. When I booked seats there was hardly a seat taken for any leg of the trip - at first I thought maybe SA was experiencing the post world cup tourist hangover, but October is along way away. Maybe the VA site has some glitches and that ticket is not going to be available. It's amazing, all four legs have hardly any seats taken in UC, except the second half of the upper deck on the SFO-LHR 747 trips.

I'm in a new job and so general craziness has kept me away from here for a while, so I'm not up to speed.

Just because very few seats are taken it doesn't mean that there are very few bookings. Many people do not pre-request seats and for some who have booked through VH or a travel agent they will not be able to access their bookings until the tickets are issued or have a booking reference.

With regard to the second half of the upper deck on the SFO-LHR trips, this has been discussed here and it is thought it may be because the maps have not been changed to reflect the re-configuration of the upper deck on the LHR 747s

For some reason this has been happening a fair bit. Not sure why, when I blew the balance of my VS miles in May to bring the family out from Europe it was the same deal on both their flights until very close to the time. Was able to pick and choose seats for 'em. Beats me why this would be as the flights were actually pretty much full both ways, as was evidenced closer to the time of travel, and me myself always like to pick seats even before you make a booking, like you can with US airlines :)

Thanks HL, I've just never seen the seat maps so devoid of life, and what with the cheap deal, I was getting a little paranoid. BTW my fare in UC was only $400 more than quoted on the website for PE!
