I've been wondering about what virgin's actual policy is about carrying musical instruments - when I fly out to SFO with my violin will I be allowed to carry it on along with a normal carry on bag?

If not, Virgin will lose me as a customer for that trip, as there isn't a hope in hell I'm going to be putting my poor violin through the hell that is "the hold"....

Don't worry I wouldn't try and play it during the flight like that first A380 flight ... ):

Crispin the VS website says this

CARRIAGE OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Passengers carrying one musical instrument in its case, which is too large to fit within the cabin baggage allowance, may carry it through the airport security checkpoint subject to the relevant Airport Authority approval, where it will be taken at the departure gate for loading into the hold of the aircraft.

This item will incur excess baggage charges if it is in excess of your free baggage allowance.

Please contact us in advance, if you have any questions or if you plan to carry a large musical instrument.

Also depends what class you are flying in too in terms of it being your carry-on

maybe you could hide it in your coat ...

tonty,

Yeah, I had seen that, but I wondered if anyone actually had any real-life experience - I can't believe they will make people put expensive instruments into the hold ...

I'll give them a ring at some point (or possibly just ask on board), and if they really don't let them on board it will be off to BA who do ...

Sure, I carried my alto sax on board ex-SFO as recently as March this year. I haven't risked my tenor, that might be a bit too big.

My alto case is 24" by 10" by 7".

Soprano case 27" x 6" x 5" has also travelled with me on VS.

Everyone pretty unphased about it. Until I started playing that is.

Cheers, Howard
