Contrary to the wording of the story, the deal is with VX, not VS. A confirmed order for 30 A320 and 10 A320neo and an option on another 20 neos. This will make VX the launch customer for the 320neo.

The FT has quite a bit more information, including several comments from SRB. You have to register for it, but the main points were that the new aircraft should enable VX to offer a Hawaii route from the west coast. SRB also says he may reluctantly have to sell more of his shareholding in VS to be able to be competitive after the recent BA deal, and provide stability so the airline is still around in 50 years... Delta (eek!) get mentioned again by the FT as a possible suitor.
