Happened to us a few times in the usa. once I could and wife couldnt and at the airport transpired flight was oversold (well they all are) and she was on standby. Not a worry as you will get on the next flight .

And a handful of cash for IDB hopefully?
I'm sure it's nothing, details below:
For domestic travel
1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331)
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

could just be something as simple as a watch list mis-match.
I found this number on the UA site but whether its the right one or not ...
1-XXX-XX-XXX - number for online check-in support
I think that EGG would rather fly with his friend than be denied boarding (even if he does get some $$)
edited to remove phone number now EGG has see it

IDB ? sorry not familiar with what that means.
United only seem to have 8 business seats and work in strict seniority of their flying scheme so not really suprising. We got a voucher and some miles however in future we fly coach as there is less chance of this happening (I am told). It was only a 90 mins wait so we were not that bothered (and what could we do about it if we were) - coupons bought a Sam Adams for 2 and some food

IDB = Involuntary Denied Boarding, i.e. bumped
IDB = Involuntarily Denied Boarding
I fly United a lot (1K status) and get this message sometimes when I logon to unitedairlines.co.uk, if I logout, then logon to united.com I can usually check-in ok. Make sure that your profile matches exactly what it says on your passport and just keep trying. Their site is known as .bomb for many reasons.

Are you both booked on the same itinerary - they won't bump one of you if so. More likely a glitch.
There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

Just looked at my booking and it says Mr my name on the checking in page it says mynamemiddleinitialsurname no Mr, it's made my Christian name one letter longer I now am christophera which is not the same as my reservation.

Don't worry about that- I have had a few times with Continental becoming Johnr when a middle initial is incorporated into my first name. I think it may actually be intentional to reduce the frequency of name clashes but ISTBC
Thanks for the numbers rang them got a 20 min runaround then cut off. Will just have to wait and see, they rang me in the UK on my mobile about six times asking me to call back only to find it was a 3 or 4 minute time change and then a flight number change. Odd they cant call whilst I am here and give me some options before getting to the check in desk.
It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that they've caused a lot of stress and kerfuffle over something which is - hopefully - in the end going to amount to nothing significant at all.
I do hope that's the case, and that you raise with them the fact that a) they've caused all this stress, b) the time you've wasted trying to get in touch with them and sort it out, and c) the negative impact it's had on your trip.

Well off to bed now, I am thinking it's because my name looks different on my eticket than it did on the check in page. It shows as seats available on the seat map

I hope they will re-imburse your phone calls/charges !
As seats are showing as available it sounds like an appalling customer service nause which United like Virgin are infamous for.
Hope all works out tomorrow (well today) for you and your friend.

Kerbside geezer at United couldnt do enough for us, got me my boarding pass himself to save me queueing. Tipped him a 20 lol.
