Flight changes

I contacted Virgin to find out the cost of moving my return flight back a few days. They stated around £1700 as new tickets would have to be issued, however if I waited until the outbound journey had been completed it would only be £90.
Has anybody any experience of this ?

It will all be down to fare codes available on each flight. It would appear the new inbound flight you are looking at can only have e higher, more expensive fare codes left, whilst the outbound will have similar to what you are on now, so you only need to pay the change fee.

This is perfectly normal - if you alter your booking prior to travel, and are on a restricted ticket, then you are effectively terminating your old contract (ticket) and entering into a new one - which will be calculated using the current fare rules.

Whereas, if you wait untill you have started travel, the fare difference will be calculated using the historical fare rules (when you actually purchased the ticket) - which, more often than not, is always less.

When I have wished to upgrade a ticket I have come across this and indeed FC have always advised me to wait until my outbound travel has been completed and then try for the inbound sector, it reduces it by quite a margin. y)
